Master class: how to make a pencil case from oak for school

School time has come, and this inspired me to create crafts for school. This time it will be an oak pencil case. I will use parquet as the material, and the main tool we will need is a circular saw.

By the way, a circular saw is the main tool of a carpenter. You can, of course, make do with other tools, or even work with your hands, but then the manufacturing process will be significantly delayed.

Parquet is a very convenient material for beginners to work with small items. It has already been processed, cut into small pieces, no thicknesser is needed to process it, and there is even a spike to set it to the required width or length. And this material is well dried and of good quality!

First we need to prepare blanks of the required size. Let's cut off the tenons on the blanks and cut one of the blanks in thickness into thin lamellas. I have a band saw and a surface planer, so I used them to make blanks of the required thickness, but if I didn’t have it, I could do it on a circular saw with subsequent grinding.

I cut all the grooves and tenons on a circular saw, which is faster than using a router. You just need to set the height of the disk and that's it. To obtain a groove of the desired width, you can move the rip fence little by little.

The kit is ready for gluing. I go through the wide parts of the tenons a little with a chisel, so the gap will be thinner. The ends absorb glue well, you need to smear more generously. But it is important that the glue does not go beyond the seam. This is the dilemma. You need to squeeze it well with clamps.

I believe that the pencil case should have rounded corners so as not to get hurt, scratch anything, and so on. I make small roundings by sanding or using a plane. But here I’ll do it with a router. I find it convenient to work with small workpieces with the router turned upside down and clamped in a vice. It turns out to be an improvised milling table. The peculiarity of working with a cutter with a bearing is that the bearing rests against the workpiece and does not allow the cutter to remove more than necessary. Therefore, the chamfers are smooth.

A lid without a pattern is boring, so let’s decorate it with a cut-out picture. To do this, I printed out an image of a clover on paper and glued it to the lid. Anyone can cut along a line with a jigsaw, the main thing is not to rush. It is quite possible to do this with a hand jigsaw, the workpiece is of small thickness. It takes little time to work by hand or on a machine. But the lid immediately became more fun!

And now we have a long and tedious grind ahead of us. So what to do? All our mistakes need to be hidden somehow. Taking into account the use of stain and oil, it is better to finish sanding with at least 240 grit. Something like 100 - 150 - 240.

Now all that remains is to cover it with stain and oil. I just rub the product and the look changes right before my eyes! I recommend using oil stain, it goes on more smoothly.

By the way, I forgot to tell you about the quarter on the lid. It was made on the same circular saw and allowed us to maintain the thickness of the lid and at the same time leave a narrow groove. And it looks more fun.
