My garage is a typical size - small - 6m by 4m. Therefore, the main concept of its arrangement is to maximize the thoughtfulness of the use of the workspace. I use the garage as a workshop for auto and motorcycle repairs for my pleasure. I love order and cleanliness.
When I first moved in, I bought a ready-made shelving unit from prefabricated elements in Leroy. But the needs are growing and it has quickly exhausted itself. Moreover, it is very flimsy and unstable.
So I decided to make my own as a test. I thought about what I would use for storage, made measurements and a sketch. I purchased the materials at the nearest metal depot. Namely, a corner of 30 ka, a strip of 30 ka and a rectangular pipe of 50 ka.
Well, the work began to boil. Cooked on the spot. The back part was welded to the gate frame, thereby ensuring immobility. I made a small stand underneath for future floor pouring. The rack will be concreted into the floors. This is the output product:

I spent about 35 meters of rolled metal on the entire structure. But he did it thoroughly, sparing no material. I covered it with acid yellow primer Body 960 and painted it with gray paint.

There is also a set of tools and accessories without which it is difficult to imagine car care:
- Complete set of wrenches. The set should include both standard (carob or end) and special ones, for example, for spark plugs;
- You need to bring a wrench, a drill, and a hammer. A car hose, a canister, a hydrometer, and a caliper will inevitably come in handy;
- A washbasin is required. Also in the garage there should be a set of taps and dies, fire extinguishing equipment;
- A broom will help keep the garage clean; in winter you will have to use a shovel.
There is no need to assemble the wrenches yourself, since there are already ready-made kits on sale, where everything is provided.

Globally, all furniture used in garages is divided into two categories - racks with shelves and workbenches with tables. The choice of configuration of shelves and tables depends on what work will be carried out in the garage. Before you start arranging the interior of your garage, you need to answer a few questions for yourself:
- What work will be carried out in the garage? What types of car breakdowns can you fix yourself?;
- Which tool do you plan to use more often? What types of workbenches are needed?;
- What is the groundwater level? This is especially important if the garage is new and does not have an inspection hole.
Workbench and work area
Not always garage furniture also includes a workbench - it may be required to repair a car, and modern realities are such that many car owners send their car to a car service center at the first problem. This approach does not exclude the possibility of having a workbench in the garage. But you need to decide what type of workbench you need to install. Homemade workbenches have a classification:
- For metalworking, metalworking benches are used;
- Carpentry workbenches are used to work with wood;
- There are such universal machines for all repair work.
The difference between workbenches lies in the types of materials. All-metal workbenches are used for metalworking: they can withstand any load and do not rot under the influence of machine oil. - To meet the rigidity requirement, you need to use boards with a thickness of at least 30 mm to make the table. If for objective reasons it is impossible to use such boards, you will need to additionally strengthen the table with stiffening ribs;
- No sharp edges are allowed on the table.
An alternative to a workbench with a workbench can be an old desk if it is not possible to make homemade tool furniture.
For storing things and tools
In practice, the installation of furniture for workshops and garages begins with the installation of racks and shelves. Since in our realities garages are also used for storing household rubbish, you need to provide enough free space for everything to fit. Preference should be given to shelving. They allow you to make the most of the free space available in the garage. The space above the workbench can also be functional - you need to install shelves there.
Like a workbench, shelving can be assembled yourself. Both wood and metal profile pipe can be used as the main material. The sequence of work does not depend on the choice of material:
- Two standard stairs are being manufactured - they will be connected to each other. It is important to calculate the distance between the shelves correctly, and it is also important to calculate their number;
- Then the stairs are connected in such a way as to form a bookcase. To properly join the shelves, you must first align the stairs at the top and bottom;
- Plywood or boards can be used as flooring for the shelves of the rack.
Garage shelving can be floor or wall mounted. Floor shelving has a base and can support a lot of weight. Wall racks are more preferable for storing small tools and accessories. They can be made not deep. A wall-mounted rack with horizontal slats should be used when the structure is planned to be installed on the entire wall. Vertical slats fit multiple sections. You can also install a corner shelving unit, but it is most convenient to make sections on the entire wall with horizontal shelves and storage compartments. This will allow you to place all the tools, containers, and boxes on the wall. The garage should not be overly filled with furniture, since there should be at least one meter left on both sides of the car.
Along with shelving, hooks and clothes hangers can be installed in the garage workshop.
Functionality and requirements
Most often, garage furniture is shelving. Stationary shelves cannot be changed in height, but they can withstand heavy loads. Prefabricated shelving has vertical posts made of perforated metal, which allows you to change their height. Mobile shelves can be moved using wheels. It is better if the most frequently used tools are located near the workbench, which is the main workplace. It is important to maintain order here, to put everything in its place immediately upon completion of work, otherwise the work area will quickly become cluttered. Screws and bolts should be kept in transparent containers. It makes sense to sign closed boxes. Small and medium-sized tools can be conveniently stored on perforated panels. Most often they are placed in front of workbenches. Magnetic strips are also convenient to use for the most frequently used tools.
