What cords should I use for knitting carpets?

Most often, cotton or polyester cords with a diameter of 4-5 mm are chosen for these purposes. This thickness is convenient for knitting and allows you to work out the pattern well. But this is not a general rule - you can take cords with a larger or smaller diameter depending on the size of the carpet.

It is recommended to buy cords with a core, as they better retain the shape of the product. Cords without a core are less dense, so the carpet is not as lush, voluminous and stretches more.

As for the material, cotton and polyester are what you need for knitting.

The cotton cord is very soft, pleasant to the touch, environmentally friendly, and does not electrify. A carpet made of cotton cord is dense and heavy, due to which it lies perfectly on the floor. But the choice of colors is often limited to only natural shades, the cord is used up faster, and knitting turns out to be somewhat more difficult due to the low elasticity of the cotton material.

Polyester cords for knitting carpets are no less pleasant to the touch; they are soft, smooth, easy to crochet, and hold their shape well. At the same time, the elasticity of polyester only has a positive effect on the comfort and speed of knitting. And the carpets come out voluminous, soft, and structural. In addition, polyester fiber does not become electrified and does not become a dust collector. Another advantage of polyester cords for knitting carpets is a huge selection of colors to suit any setting and artistic design. And the colors do not fade or fade over time, so polyester products are built to last.

Polypropylene cord for crocheting rugs is also suitable. But not everyone is comfortable working with it due to the characteristic creaking and strong sliding.

Useful tips

Each experienced craftswoman has her own secrets for creating the perfect product.

Key words of advice for beginners:

  • Finding out the size of the future carpet is quite simple. Knit a sample - a fragment of the pattern. Measure the height of one row of the pattern and multiply by the number of rows in the pattern. Double the resulting number and get the diameter of the finished round carpet.

  • In order to extend the life of your floor carpet, use a trick. Sew a special backing onto the bottom of the carpet. This way the cord will not fray due to constant contact with the floor.

Caring for the finished product is quite simple. Small items can be easily washed in a washing machine. The cord does not require special chemical treatment.

It is recommended to wash the rug in water up to 30 degrees. It is dried flat.

You can learn how to knit a carpet from polyester cord with your own hands from the video below.

Features of product care

Finally, it’s worth talking about the features of caring for a hand-woven product. No craftswoman wants the hours and effort spent to go to waste and the rug to immediately lose its attractiveness.

If you want to spend less time caring for your carpet, weave the product from polyester cord. It is moisture resistant and can be washed in a machine or by hand at low temperatures without fear of damaging the product. Cotton rugs can only be washed by hand. Drying the mat is also an important step. To prevent it from stretching and deforming, it must be dried exclusively on a horizontal surface, completely unfolded, and straightened out all small folds.

If you follow these simple recommendations and try to treat the carpet with care, it will decorate your room for a long time and be pleasing to the eye.

To learn how to knit a polyester cord rug yourself, see the following video.

The use of handmade decorative elements in the interior allows you to transform and improve the style of the room. They fit into any design, complement and add charm. These include DIY cord carpets. They will make the house cozy, warm, but at the same time openwork products can complement the decoration of the room. But still, in order to make a beautiful cord carpet yourself, it is worth considering the features of knitting, as well as popular types of products.

I called this rug “King of Popcorn” because the most repeated element in this rug is popcorn. The rug is oval in shape, size - 1.2 m x 0.8 m. Crocheted cord rugs

Crocheted cord rugs.
Carpet patterns Magnificent and Oval My name is Lyuba Polevaya, I live in Vologda, I am married, I have two small children. I am currently on maternity leave with my second child.

I love to crochet. Previously, I knitted various things for my daughter, pillows, vases and other items for the home from Ribbon, Spaghetti, Noodles yarn.

Some time ago I discovered such a knitting material as polyester cord with a core. Cord knitting is a very exciting activity that brings pleasure from the work. It’s nice to do something with your own hands for your loved ones, as well as for lovers of beautiful, practical things who value handmade work.

Polyester thread is a synthetic fiber, 100% polyester, with a springy fiber structure, which ensures the ability of products to return to their original state when stretched or compressed.

Despite the fact that it is synthetic, products made from cord look as if they were made from natural raw materials, they are environmentally friendly, durable, moisture-resistant, durable and high-quality, have a beautiful shape, while being soft and pleasant to the touch.

Carpets, rugs, runners, bags, jewelry, baskets and other things can be knitted from polyester cord.

I love crocheting cord rugs. I want to say that such carpets do not deform, do not cause allergies, are not susceptible to mold, and even dust does not collect on them!

They are easy to machine wash at 30 degrees. It needs to be dried flat.

I present to you my works - crocheted cord carpets.

Crocheted cord rug “Magnificent”

The carpet has a relief pattern, which even provides a massage effect for the feet. The diameter of the carpet is 1m.

On my own behalf, I will add that on the Internet you can find video courses and descriptions of knitting this carpet, which is quite popular.

But many needlewomen would be interested in the scheme. I found this on the website https://www.p-an-da.com/2019/11/crocheted-rug.html

Crochet carpet from cord "Grand"

The “Grand” carpet has a diameter of 2.3 m. Cord consumption is about 2200 m. The weight of the carpet is 9.5 kg.

This rug looks great in both the living room and the bedroom. It can be presented as a housewarming gift or for any other occasion.

I couldn’t find a pattern for the “Grand” carpet, but there are quite a lot of descriptions on the Internet. I want to say that for some reason many needlewomen are looking for patterns for these particular carpets. They are beautiful and magnificent, no doubt, but it is quite possible to use the pattern of any napkin and crochet your own unique carpet from a cord.

I have quite a lot of napkin patterns on my blog, look here>> and here>> you can choose a pattern suitable for crocheting a cord rug.

Oval crocheted cord rug

Size 105x140 cm. Cord consumption - 700 m. Carpet weight - 3 kg. An oval carpet will find a worthy place near a chest of drawers, an armchair, in the bedroom, or in the bathroom.

We do not have a diagram of this particular oval carpet. This is Lyuba’s creative fantasy.

I can suggest another very similar scheme:

And those who do not know how to crochet, but would like to purchase similar carpets, can contact Lyuba, her VKontakte page: https://vk.com/id75335091.

Lyuba, thank you for introducing me to such interesting creativity and elegant, simply chic cord carpets. Good luck and new creative works!

You can also knit square carpets and rugs from the cord. We have diagrams of these here>>.

Good luck to everyone in their creativity and good mood!

“Vasilisa” - a crocheted polyester cord carpet

Posted on January 3, 2020 by Natalia

For the Vasilisa carpet I used a polyester cord (D=5 mm) with a core and an N8 hook. Initially, I planned to knit this rug from a cord of one color - the shade “Cornflower” (33). But when I started knitting, I realized that the cord I had stored was not enough for the entire project. Therefore, already during work, I decided that the carpet would be two-color. Moreover, for inserts…Read more »

Interesting options

Rectangular rug

Before you start knitting, you need to prepare the yarn and hook. You can choose the color of the yarn based on your wishes; it is better to combine different contrasting colors or make smooth transitions.

To create a small rug, you can opt for thick threads made from acrylic, wool or cotton material. For larger ones, ropes, old T-shirts, plastic bags, and shoelaces are better suited.

The hook must be selected depending on the thickness of the threads.

For knitting, double crochets and single crochets are used. The knitting technique consists of using five different rows:

  • the first row is knitted from double crochets on a chain, then the work needs to be turned over;
  • then a row of single crochets, insert the hook under the front side of the loop and turn the work over again;
  • knit like the previous row, but place the hook under both sides of the loop;
  • the next row is performed in a similar manner to the second;
  • The fifth, final row is made of double crochets under the far wall of the loop.

The rest of the knitting process consists of repeating rows two to five. The knitting pattern is shown in the photo.

Round rug

Knitting a round rug also mainly consists of stitches. Knitting is similar to creating a rectangular rug, but with a little twist.

To knit the second row, you need to make two stitches from each loop. In the third, columns are added through one loop. Fourth - two loops are added and the binding is performed every two columns.

Further, by analogy, in the next rows the number of skipped loops increases.

Oval rug

Making an oval rug is also a fairly simple task. The beauty and brightness of the product will depend on the color combination of threads. Here is a description of the knitting process:

  1. We crochet air loops to create a column of the required height.
  2. After this, you need to knit stitches along the length of the column of air loops.
  3. At the ends it is necessary to make columns that will be connected in one loop. Due to this, you will get the shape of a semicircle, which will increase in the process of tying the chain.

Cord knitting

To knit a cord rug, you can use cotton or polyester cords.

The difference between such rugs will be only in their quality characteristics. Polyester fibers are not exposed to light (will not fade) and do not accumulate dust between the threads. And cotton ones, due to their greater weight, lie better on the surface and are made from natural raw materials.

Schemes for work can be found by searching on the Internet, and more experienced craftsmen can create them themselves. In your work, you can also use the patterns of your favorite napkins. Let's look at a few of the most popular schemes:

Fabulous. Features an embossed design. Used in bedrooms, bathrooms, children's rooms. The diameter is about one meter.

Grandee. Oval rug knitted from polyester cord. Keeps its shape well even after washing. It has a fairly flexible structure.

Sun. An excellent solution for a summer house, knitted from cotton cord.

Popcorn. It looks very nice thanks to the relief elements.

Knitting from bags

A rug knitted from bags is made in a similar way to those described above. The difference lies in the use of a different type of “yarn”, namely from plastic or garbage bags.

This rug is best suited for a bathroom, toilet, hallway or country house. This is due to the fact that it is quite easy to clean and does not accumulate dust and dirt between the loops.

In order to make thread from bags, they need to be cut into thin long strips. By connecting them together, we get a long thread for work. You can choose any knitting pattern, even the simplest one. But still, it is not recommended to choose too openwork patterns, since in such patterns it will be more difficult to hide the junctions of the strips.
