How to measure vertical and horizontal blinds

Now, probably, every second window in apartments and houses is plastic. However, having protected their home from noise, heat loss and dust, many people think about how to hide from the scorching sun or, which is also not uncommon, curious neighbors. And here the choice often falls on purchasing blinds, after which many, having decided to do everything themselves, wonder: how to install them? Let's figure it out.

According to unspoken statistics, most of us prefer classic horizontal blinds (we don’t take offices and public places into account here), so let’s talk about them. Find out how to choose horizontal blinds here.

Important information about correct measuring procedure

To obtain the most accurate results, use an iron tape measure. Don't try to round numbers. Consider everything down to the millimeter. To correctly determine the size, first measure the width and then the length of the window.

If you are taking measurements on old Soviet windows, you should measure each window sash separately.

Measure all parameters in different places. There may be chips on the windows, which should also be taken into account. As a rule, the assortment of construction markets offers three main types of blinds: horizontal, vertical and woven roller blinds.

How to measure a window to install horizontal blinds

Horizontal blinds are popular among the population. This is due to the fact that they take up less space than vertical ones, so they are suitable for a balcony or loggia. The structure is not massive, it is mounted by drilling. They are made from thin logs of wood: cherry, beech, oak, yew. Regardless of the type of wood, such blinds look elegant, especially if the double-glazed window of the loggia is wooden. Additionally, the models are painted with a layer of paint, thanks to which they shine characteristically in the sun.

To take measurements for a horizontal structure, first decide on the installation method. In order to install the structure, it is necessary to measure the length and width of the glass unit. When purchasing a model, add + 1 cm to the length and + 5 to the width.

Installing horizontal blinds on a sash involves:

  1. We measure the width of the window opening in several places.
  2. We make a mark at the widest point.
  3. Add one centimeter to the width.
  4. We measure the height.
  5. Add four centimeters to the height.

You can clearly see the measurements in the photo below:

How to measure for vertical blinds

Vertical blinds are made from fabric, polyester and plastic. The materials are pre-treated with special dust-repellent and antistatic agents. They are easy to care for and clean from dust. In addition, the market offers models made of aluminum. Such structures are heavier than woven or bamboo, but are wear-resistant. The only drawback of the designs is their size. On a small balcony, vertical slats look out of place.

Measuring vertical blinds

Vertical structures are attached to the opening and into the opening. To evenly cover the entire window area with slats, the area on the sides must exceed eight centimeters. Thus, the double-glazed window looks harmonious. When installing on an opening or to the ceiling, we add to the height the area from the ceiling to the window or from the opening to the window. A more detailed measurement mechanism is shown in the photo:

Measuring vertical slats

Roller blinds are a practical option in terms of installation and measurement. They are installed on the wall and to the glass unit. The most popular woven pattern is the zebra system. When measuring, add 1 cm to the total height of the window. The curtain is one solid sheet with a box at the top. When open, the fabric hides in it. Using mounting tape, the box can be easily attached to the double-glazed window. To do this, glue double-sided tape to the structure, which you then press against the window. Before attaching the curtain rod with tape, be sure to degrease the surface of the window. Make sure that the curtain is attached evenly and perform installation strictly according to the markings. The rest of the fabric roller shutters are installed in the same way.

Window blinds are an excellent option for arranging the interior of a home, especially in “technical” rooms: kitchens, bathrooms, verandas, balconies. The selection of texture, width, color and control method allows you to achieve not only purely utilitarian goals - changing the flow of light entering the room from the street, but also achieve a certain decorative effect that meets the design concept.

How to measure blinds for plastic windows is the topic of this article.

Types of blinds

The installation and, accordingly, the dimensions of the blinds depend on the direction in which the slats are oriented - strips of fabric or strips of metal or plastic.

There are few options: horizontal and vertical.

Horizontal blinds are the most popular in residential areas, as they have a number of advantages, the main one of which is their compactness.

Due to the small width of the lamellas - 5-15 mm, they can be installed in the following positions:

  • close to the window glass - flush with the window plastic profile (isolight);
  • on top of the plastic window profile - separately on each of the window sashes;
  • in the window opening flush with the plane of the wall;
  • in the form of curtains covering the window opening from the ceiling to the windowsill.

Depending on this, the dimensions of the blinds can be measured in different ways.

The only tool needed to take measurements is a construction tape.

Measurements for horizontal blinds

For blinds that completely cover the window opening, you should measure the height of the window opening from the window sill to the ceiling. The thickness of the window sill +20-40 mm is added to the obtained value.

For blinds located in the window opening flush with the wall, measure the height of the opening minus 10 mm. The width of the opening is minus 20 mm.

For those located on plastic windows – the height of the window profile is minus 20 mm, the width of the window profile is minus 20 mm.

To install Isolite blinds, only plastic windows with a glazing bead design that secures the double-glazed window in a rectangular PVC profile are suitable. Plastic windows with beveled glazing beads are not suitable for installation.

Measure the height of the window glass - from the upper inner edge of the bead to the lower inner edge +50 mm. - this is the length of the canvas. The width of the canvas is determined by the distance from the inner sides of the bead minus 10 mm.

Isolite blinds are equipped with side “U”-shaped guides in which the edges of the slats slide. The guides prevent the canvas from sagging when the plastic window sash is tilted to the “micro-ventilation” position. Therefore, the width of the lamellas is determined by the height of the profile, multiplied by x2 minus 10 mm - 5 mm on each side for free movement along the guides.

Before deciding on the width of the blinds, you need to measure the height of the “U”-shaped profile for the specific model of blinds you have chosen.

How to correctly measure plastic windows for an opening with a quarter

In houses with quarter-length window openings, the edges of the window frames should extend beyond them by 2-3 cm. This ensures aesthetic appeal, as well as tightness. To install new structures, plastic windows are measured. Their feature is as follows.

  1. The width of the opening in its narrow part is determined. Add 40-60 mm to the result obtained and get the size of the window frame. If the wall is not level, the additional size should be reduced.
  2. The width of the internal opening is measured. The dimensions of the frame are set in such a way that they do not exceed the obtained measurement value, and also satisfy the requirement of the previous paragraph.
  3. The height of the window is determined by the distance from the top opening to the base of the bottom opening. Subtract 10 mm to foam the gap. In this case, it is important that the window frame fits into a quarter of the horizontal part of the opening.
  4. If you plan to install a window sill, a support profile should be located under the window frame. This requires reducing the window height by 30 mm. The stand profile is also necessary for installing the drip sill.

It should be kept in mind: the height of the window frame without a stand profile should be slightly less than the distance from the inner surface of the upper slope to the window sill. The height of the frame with the stand profile must be equal to or less than the distance from the upper slope on the inside to the lower edge of the window sill.

Dimensions of vertical blinds

Vertical blinds are a less common option in residential areas. It is more often used in offices or public buildings.

But with a successful selection of fabric colors and textures, vertical blinds can successfully replace curtains.

There can be several options for their location:

  • in a window opening;
  • over the window opening to the window sill;
  • over the window opening to the floor.

In the first case, you should measure the height of the window opening from the window sill to the upper window slope. Subtract 20-30 mm from the resulting value. – sagging of the chains connecting the lower edges of the vertical slats.

The width should be measured along the inner edges of the slopes. Two features of vertical blinds should be taken into account - the width of the lamellas - their number should completely cover the window opening and be located freely in it so as not to overlap each other and not interfere with the rotation of the lamellas around their axis. The second feature is the way the slats are moved: to one side, or from the center to the edges of the window opening.

When selecting the dimensions of the lamellas, the total width of the canvas when fully closed should be 20 mm narrower than the width of the window opening.

When installing blinds on a cornice like curtains, the main dimension is the distance of the cornice from the wall. This distance should be equal to half the width of the lamellas + 20 mm. If the blinds are installed up to the window sill, their length should be 20-30 mm. shorter than the distance from the bottom edge of the cornice + suspension + fastening chains below.

If the blinds are installed below the edge of the window sill, you should measure the distance of the cornice from the most protruding point - the edge of the window sill or heating radiators (grates) + half the width of the slats + 20 mm for free rotation around the axis.

The length of the lamellas “to the floor” is the distance from the floor to the ceiling - minus the thickness of the cornice, minus the height of the suspension, minus 20-30 mm - the sagging of the chains fastening the lamellas.

Measuring principle of the “ROLLITE”, “BESTA” system

Product width measurement:

Measure the distance between the top left point of the bead and the top right point of the bead, as shown in the figure below.

Product height measurement:

The measurement is carried out in the same way. Those. The distance is measured from the bottom edge of the bead at the top of the window to the top edge of the bead at the bottom of the window. Limitations for the Rollite, Besta Width limitation – 0.3 – 1.9 m Height limitation – 0.3 – 2 m. Manufacturing accuracy 1 mm.

  • When the bead depth is LESS than 1 cm, the BESTA
  • When the bead depth is MORE than 1 cm, the ROLLITE

Attention! Dense rolled fabrics are not desirable in the production of Rollite and Besta systems due to the possible incomplete winding of the fabric into the roll. Maximum height limit for fabrics with a weight equal to or greater than 360 g/m2. and a thickness equal to or greater than 0.50 mm. - 1 meter.

Choosing an option for attaching blinds to a window opening

  • over the window opening (the cornice is attached to the wall above the window);
  • inside the window opening;
  • installation inside - on the doors. Which of the three methods is better is up to you to decide, focusing on the design of the window and the type of blinds you choose. Vertical blinds are mounted on the wall over the opening, or less often - directly into the window opening. Rolls, or rolls, are attached in any way. On Russian plastic windows, it is advisable to install blinds on each sash, because thanks to this method, maximum maneuverability will remain in the window area, while the blinds fixed in the window opening will need to be opened and closed every time in order to open the window slightly for ventilation.

If you are the happy owner of a wide European-style window with beautiful overhead slats in the sashes, the method of attaching blinds to the window opening, or over the opening, will suit you. Blinds, mounted exactly end-to-end in the opening, can stand out beautifully against contrasting walls with an open edging of plastic or wood.

You can talk about the beauty of this or that method for a long time, but it is better to make a visual comparison. The illustration below shows what the window looks like when installed outside, inside the opening, or on the sash.

If the clear perimeter of the window frame harmoniously complements the interior, then it is better to install blinds inside the sash. How the size of the window visually changes with different installation methods. The placement of the blinds mounting block above the plastic window also visually lengthens the window.

So, the list of necessary window measurements will depend on the chosen installation method.

How to measure a window to install blinds on the sash

This method is characterized by layering the curtain fabric onto the plastic surfaces of the frame on both sides; it is this margin that will ensure a tight fit of the fabric and eliminate gaps and gaps that would look unsightly from the street at night, and would even partially violate the confidentiality of private life.

  1. The width of roller blinds and blinds is determined by the distance between the slopes. 100 mm or more is added to this indicator (if there are pipes or any elements on the side of the window that you want to close, then the canvas is increased to the required area);
  2. The length should be measured from the upper slope to the window sill or below (how far below the window sill the canvas will be is determined individually). Further, depending on the type of curtain-blinds, additional centimeters are added to the height under the “package” (the height of the assembled blinds). The “package” must be taken into account when installing blinds above the opening, and always into the opening. You need to make sure that the assembled blinds will not interfere with the opening of the window. For roller blinds, you need to add 5 cm under the package, for aluminum horizontal ones - depending on the height of the blinds - see the table:

When choosing the length of the roller blind, you should take into account the size of the window sill. With a wide window sill, the slats lower to its surface, with a narrow one - to an arbitrary level. Tip: To ensure that the canvas does not lie on the window sill, but only reaches it beautifully, measure the distance from the upper slope to the window sill, and subtract 20 mm - this length will look most impressive .

Please note that for aluminum blinds there are restrictions for large windows: height - no more than 3.4 m, width - no more than 2.85 m, total maximum area - no more than 6 m.

If the blinds need to hide the window sill, you need to take into account the amount of projection of the cornice along with the blinds. If the length is not enough, use special lining rings that come with the blinds, or available materials.

Don’t forget to determine the height at which the control cord plumb line will be located - 15 cm above the bottom edge of the blinds.

Measuring the window when installing it in the opening

In this case, it is advisable to reduce the dimensions of the opening by 1 cm, for a more organic installation: from the width minus 1 cm, from the height minus 1 cm.

Measuring a window for vertical blinds

The first step is to determine the installation method. In all cases, it is recommended to install it on the wall above the window, at a distance of at least 10 cm from the top edge of the opening (to avoid chipping the wall). Installation in an opening is also practiced, but only if the curtain rod does not interfere with the opening of the window sashes.

When installing vertical blinds in a window opening, you need to measure all sides of the opening - left and right (height), top and bottom (width), from the obtained values we take the smaller ones, if there is any discrepancy in the wall panels. Next, subtract 1 cm from the height and width.

To install over the opening, you need to add 8-10 cm in width on both sides to properly close the gaps.

Methods of measuring for different types of blinds

Modern blinds are a huge assortment of light-diffusing products for the design of windows, partitions and doorways both in residential premises and in offices, business centers, children's and medical institutions, etc. If you do not take into account the variety of materials and color palette, then essentially the market offers 3 types of products:

  • horizontal;
  • roll;
  • vertical.

To choose the right curtain model, you must be guided by the geometry of the opening, the color palette of the interior and the proportions of the space

Each type of blind has its own measurement technology. It is also important to consider where the products will be attached:

  • on the wall and cover the entire opening;
  • on the sash;
  • on the fixed part of the frame;
  • on the upper slope of the window.

The following provides detailed step-by-step instructions on how to correctly measure openings, which will help you avoid common mistakes when choosing the size of blinds. You will need a tape measure, a chair or stepladder, a piece of paper and a pencil for drawings and notes.

To choose the right curtain size, you first need to measure the width and height of the opening.

Since builders are far from correct geometry, the height of the opening should be measured at three points: top, middle and bottom, height - from each edge and in the middle.

What parameters to choose for the size of the curtain depends on where they will be hung. Below we will examine each case in more detail.

For wall mounting

Installing blinds on a partition above a window is suitable for any structure. It is understood that the blinds will cover the entire opening, capturing the wall space from the sides, top and bottom. Here it is important to take into account the width of the window sill; if it is flush with the wall or protrudes slightly, the length of the curtain can be any. But if the protrusion is significant, and there are still heating radiators underneath, then it is optimal to hang blinds the length of the window sill or choose a cornice with elongated brackets; such a solution is suitable for vertical products the length of the floor.

Scheme of allowances for the dimensions of the opening for curtains installed in the partition above the window

Calculation:

  • measure the length and width of the opening at three points;
  • we select the largest indicators, denote from L - length and D - width;
  • calculate the width of the blinds to D+1 cm +10 cm (this is the minimum, optimally up to 400 mm on each side)
  • calculation of the length to L + 10 cm (minimum for the cornice) - this is the length of the blinds to the window sill; if you want to make the curtain longer or to fit the ceiling, add your parameters.

If you are planning vertical blinds in the floor with mounting on the ceiling, then you need to know the full height of the wall from its connection with the ceiling to its connection with the floor (L). It must be remembered that there should be a gap of 1-2 cm at the bottom so that the slats do not rest against the floor and do not bend.

In the case of wall mounting, you will need to know the height from the top of the window to the floor (L). Canvas length = L + min 10 cm under the cornice – 1-2 cm.

On the upper slope of the window

The option of mounting on the upper slope is convenient in that the window sill remains open, in addition, you can hang the window with one sheet, the main thing is not to forget that there are protruding fittings on the frame, so you should move the cornice away from the inner edge of the slope/frame interface by the thickness of the handles.

Scheme for calculating the size of blinds mounted on the upper slope

Calculation:

  • find out the length from the upper slope to the window sill (L) and the width - from the left vertical slope to the right (D);
  • be sure to choose D the smallest indicator, L - the largest - this will be the height of the blinds;
  • to calculate the width of the canvas from D(min) we subtract 1 cm (0.5 on each side) - the gap will allow the blinds to calmly lower and rise in the opening without touching the slopes.

On a fixed window frame

It is advisable to hang blinds on the fixed part of a plastic window when there is only one sash. But when there are 2 or more of them, hanging curtains in this way is possible, it is important to take into account the protruding handles and adjust the width of the curtain from them. The canvases will be separate for each sash.

In order not to break the canvas, you can install new, more compact handles on the plastic window or choose blinds on adjustable brackets.

The diagram shows what is important to consider when installing curtains on the top of the frame

Calculation:

  • measure the width of the window from the edge of the handle (closest to the glazing) to the vertical slope (D);
  • We calculate the width of the blinds for 1 shutter - subtract half a centimeter from D (side gap) and minus 0.3-0.5 cm for the gap between the canvas and the fittings;
  • the length of the curtain, taking into account the cornice, will be equal to the maximum measurement L - 1 cm (but you don’t have to make an allowance).

On a movable sash

Only horizontal and roller blinds are installed on a movable shutter; vertical blinds are attached in this way extremely rarely, except in an exclusive interior with a special design solution. It is not recommended to hang large and heavy blinds on plastic and wooden shutters in order to avoid deformation of the profile.

Diagram of how to calculate the size of blinds with sash mounting

Calculation:

  • determine the width of the movable sash from the outer edge to the handle (L);
  • from L we subtract 0.5-1 cm (so that when opening the shutter to the side the blinds do not break) and additionally subtract 0.5 cm so that the curtain does not catch the handle;
  • We subtract 1-2 cm from the length of the sash D, but even if you forgot to reduce the dimensions, you can always shorten the blinds with your own hands.

This mounting option is suitable for roller blinds, pleated curtains, and small horizontal blinds with thin slats.

If you want to make the canvas narrower than from the handle to the edge of the sash, when calculating the width of the product, remember that there must be an overlap on the sides - 1-2 cm

For glazing

Only roller blinds and lightweight products, for example, pleated curtains, day-night curtains, are hung on the glazing. Such models are attached to the glass with Velcro (double-sided tape). Before measuring blinds for plastic windows, pay attention to the design, especially pay attention to the sealing rubber bands; their width is important to take into account when calculating, this is important for models with side rails that press the edges of the canvas to the glazing.

If the openings are large, it is better to attach the curtain rod to the upper profile of the movable sash, and not to the glazing.

To determine the size of such blinds, you need to measure the glass from top to bottom and between the side elastic bands and subtract half a centimeter.

The diagram shows 2 ways to install light curtains: on the left - on the overlapping sash, on the right - on the glazing

Ready-made blinds: dimensions

Parameters of finished horizontal blinds: - height 150 cm - width 30-70 cm - lamella width 16-25 mm.

Dimensions of plastic horizontal blinds: height -160 cm, width - from 40 cm and above, in increments of 10 cm. There are many manufacturers of roller blinds on the domestic market, the largest players are Inspire, Lotari, Eskar, Uyut, New Leader, and others .

All of them offer blinds of any size both through stores and on the Internet; you can always easily find their catalogs and choose the product of the right size.

Roller blinds are a modern and quite attractive way to decorate a window. The products combine the simplicity and convenience of blinds, as well as the aesthetics of conventional curtains and curtains. The variety of materials produced in Holland, Belgium, Poland, Germany, Turkey makes it possible to satisfy any design whim regarding the texture, color and density of the material. However, not everyone knows how to correctly measure roller blinds for plastic windows.

Peculiarities

Roller blinds easily regulate the lighting in your home. They can completely darken a room or gently diffuse light. Main advantages of the products:

  • protection from the sun, noise and prying eyes;
  • compact design – space saving;
  • simplicity and ease of control;
  • great design possibilities;
  • durability - do not wear out over time and do not lose their aesthetic appearance;
  • do not attract dust, do not fade in the sun;
  • fabrics and mechanisms do not contain harmful substances;
  • reasonable price - depends on the size of the window, fabric and system.

Main types

The products do not require special care, but it is advisable to treat them with care. By appearance, curtains are divided into open and closed types.

Open type products

They consist of fabric and a shaft. The open shaft is usually attached to the top of the window (sash) using brackets. The types of fastening depend on the size and area of the window; brackets of larger and smaller sizes are used.

Small brackets (mini system) are usually installed on the window sash, large ones - on the frame or window opening. The fabric is wound onto the shaft. Open type roller blinds are controlled using a chain mechanism. A decorative strip is installed at the bottom of the fabric, thanks to which the fabric does not sag and is evenly wound.

To fix the product (especially when opening a window), magnetic fixation can be used.

With magnetic fixation, an open-type product is fixed using magnets and metal plates (in several places). Fixation on a fishing line occurs along the entire height of the curtain, so it is more practical and effective than magnetic fixation.

Closed type products

Closed roller blinds consist of fabric and a shaft, but the shaft is placed in a plastic or aluminum box, and guide strips are placed along the edges of the fabric, which perform the function of fixing the fabric. Closed-type products are very suitable when you do not plan to use tulle and curtains - for example, when decorating a balcony or loggia. Thanks to the refinement of the aluminum frame, the effect of completing the window design is achieved.

Guides for closed-type products eliminate the possibility of light penetration between glass and fabric,

thanks to which you can achieve complete darkness of the room. Closed-type products can have flat and U-shaped guides.

To add even more sophistication, closed-type products can be equipped with decorative chains of different colors.

Instructions for measuring roller blinds

How to measure roller blinds correctly?

For those who want to purchase blinds with a discount of up to 25% (subject to self-measurement and pickup), we offer information on measuring blinds of all popular types. Delivery within Moscow within the Moscow Ring Road is possible = 700 rubles. Delivery time: from 3 working days.

Below you will find answers to the question - how to measure roller blinds and blinds yourself.

This measurement method is also suitable for double roller blinds “day-night” (“Zebra”).

Rules for measuring cassette roller blinds Uni 1

It is recommended to install on windows with a rectangular glazing bead at least 16 mm deep.

  • Height - along the edges of the bead +20 mm.
  • Width - along the edges of the glazing bead.

Attention!

In UNI 1 systems, the fabric moves vertically between the guides and the glass. The friction of the bottom bar of the curtain against the glass leads to unclear opening and closing of the blinds. With a bead with a depth of more than 20 mm, the fabric dangles between the guide and the glass, which is also not always comfortable.

The low cost of Uni 1 determines the low consumer quality.

The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds).

ATTENTION !

In most cases, windows are not rectangular. Measurements must be taken both in width and height in THREE places. Specify the minimum value.

Rules for measuring cassette roller blinds Uni 2

It is allowed to install on windows with any glazing bead, except for protruding ones.

  • Width according to the external dimensions of the guides.
  • Height according to the external dimensions of the product (take into account the height of the box 70 mm). We recommend taking the height of the product with a margin of 10–20 mm, since if you make a mistake with the dimensions, you can remove the plugs from the guides and cut them to height.

In UNI 2 systems, the fabric moves vertically along U-shaped guides. They can be installed both on the glazing bead (if it is not semicircular) and on the frame (if the installation will not be interfered with by the window opening handle).

Installation on the frame is recommended when blackout fabric is used. In this case, maximum overlap in width is achieved and gaps (gaps) at the edges of the fabric are reduced.

ATTENTION! In most cases, windows are not rectangular. Width measurements must be taken in THREE places. Specify the minimum value.

The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds). The tape on the box is about 30mm wide at the top. When measuring, it is necessary to take into account that at least 40 mm must be left at the top to secure the box on a flat surface so that the tape adheres correctly. Often the bead is recessed, and if you try to attach the cassette with tape to a recessed bead, the product will soon fall off.

Rules for measuring Uni 2 cassette roller blinds with springs

It is allowed to install on windows with any glazing bead, except for protruding ones.

  • Height - along the outer edges of the glazing bead (junction line with the frame) (+) 20 mm.
  • Width - at the junction of the glazing bead with the frame (according to the external dimensions) or along the edges (indicate in the form which measurement option). For details, see the section “Measuring Uni 2”;
  • The cassette and guides can be installed on tape (included with the blinds).

Measuring free-hanging roller blinds

  • Width – indicate the dimensions of the PRODUCT (if necessary, install in the opening). This is the maximum width at the top of the roller blinds, fastening the fabric winding mechanism. For fabric, the parameter will be 2.5–4 cm smaller (depending on the dimensions of the product).
  • Width – indicate the dimensions ACCORDING to the FABRIC (if necessary, install on the opening, window sash). Take into account the dimensions of the free opening so that the window handle or hinge does not interfere.
  • The height indicated in the form is the actual height of the product (i.e., the dimensions of the finished product along with the height of the shaft).
  • The length of the control cannot be less than 2/3 of the height of the finished product.
  • Large product sizes (more than 1.5 m in height or width) may be limited by a specific fabric (each roll has its own dimensions).
  • The curtain winding mechanism (shaft) can be secured using tape (included with the blinds).
  • The bottom bar of the curtain can be fixed in the lower position using magnets that are attached to the frame at the bottom of the window. If necessary, indicate in the order.
  • It is necessary to mark on the form whether the roll is visible or not (see figure).

ATTENTION! This technique for measuring blinds is not standard. Due to the variety of window frame shapes, measurement rules may change.

Responsibility for the provided dimensions when purchasing blinds (without the services of our measurers) lies with the buyer!

Window measurement

In order for roller blinds to have an aesthetic appearance and high practicality, you need to understand how to measure correctly. Roller blinds are divided into several types, and each has its own characteristics of taking measurements.

Classic version

To correctly measure curtains that will subsequently be used for plastic windows, you first need to find out exactly where the roller blinds will be mounted. They can be attached to the window frame itself or on the window opening.

What measurements need to be taken:

  1. Curtain width – “B”. Minimum width – 50 cm, maximum – 300 cm.
  2. Height – “H”. The minimum curtain height is 50 cm, the maximum is 300 cm.
  3. The length of roller blinds is marked “L”. The minimum length is 27 cm and ad infinitum.

Each type of roller blind has its own acceptable dimensions. They directly depend on the type of material from which they are made. The control length cannot be less than 2/3 of the finished product.

Fastening directly to the window opening:

  1. “H” depends on the length of the protruding parts of the window sill. If the window sill is flush, then the dimensions are at your discretion.
  2. If installation is carried out on a wall, boundaries must be respected. The distance between the roller blind and the ceiling must be at least 7 cm; it must be carefully measured.

Cassette

Uni-1 cassette roller blinds are measured as follows:

  • “B” is measured along the width of the glass unit, along the vertical of the window. The measurement is taken very accurately.
  • “H” measurements are carried out in the same way as “B”, only horizontally. Which side the control will be located on is determined individually - at the request of the customer.
  • Level “H” depends on calculations and is 2/3 of the length of the product.

Uni 2 must be measured very carefully. The location of the fittings on the plastic window is of great importance when taking measurements:

  • “B” is equal to the width of the glass unit + 6.8 cm. We must not forget that the width of the product is 2 cm less, that is, a minimum of 25 cm and a maximum of 120 cm.
  • “H” is equal to the distance between the top of the upper plug and the bottom of the lower plug of the guidance system. The minimum is 20 cm and the maximum is 150 cm.

Determining the size of roller blinds according to the Mini type:

  1. The mount is installed on the window frame. To do this, measurements are taken “B” (directly of the double-glazed window itself), then you need to add the width of the glazing bead, it is approximately 0.4 cm. The remaining dimensions are calculated in the same way. Then you should choose a convenient side to control the curtain mechanism. The approximate length of the lace is 2/3 of “H”.
  2. In the event that a metal-plastic window is opened for ventilation, fixing chips for curtains are attached to its lower part. The clamps are needed so that during ventilation the roller blinds or blinds do not sweep away everything on the windowsill.

The following locking options are available:

  • magnetic latches;
  • fishing line

There are several ways to attach a curtain rod:

  • using screws;
  • on special double-sided tape;
  • suspended structure.

Roman

First, you need to decide where exactly this curtain will be located. Such a curtain can also be installed on a metal-plastic window or on the window opening itself. You need to be very careful when taking measurements during internal installation.

To determine the size of the Roman model, you need to take measurements “H” and “B”. Using the measurements taken, carry out the necessary calculations:

  • add 15 cm to “B”;
  • add 20 cm to “H”;
  • at the end of installation, “B” and “H” are approximately 0.8 cm smaller.

"Day Night"

This type of curtains can also be installed on a metal-plastic frame or on a window opening. When it comes to Day-Night curtains, you need to calculate the following: add 1.5 cm to “B” and 15 cm to “H”.

If the curtain is attached directly to a metal-plastic frame, measurements are taken in three places “B” and three places “H”. We take the smallest values as the height of the opening. If there are corner slopes, measurements are taken from the place where the curtain will hang in the future. “B” is equal to “B” of the window opening minus 5 mm. “N” equals “N” of the window opening.

For frame allowances, measurements of the height of the glazing bead and the width of the window frame are used. The distance between the curtain and the handle on the window should be approximately 1 cm, you can mark it on the fabric. It’s worth trying on as carefully as possible.

Measurement Rules

To select and buy suitable roller blinds, you need to measure the window correctly. To do this, you need to find out the following parameters:

  • Width. For correct measurement, indicate the width from the joint of the bead to the frame on one side, and the joint of the bead to the frame on the other side - this will be the width of the fabric. In roller blinds with an open type mechanism, the overall width of the roller blind will be 38 mm larger than the width of the fabric due to the upper side mounting fasteners. The roller blind measured in this way completely covers the double-glazed window and the window bead, which ensures maximum overlap of the opening.
  • Height. To correctly measure a fabric roller shutter, indicate the size from the joint of the bead to the frame at the bottom to the joint of the bead to the frame at the top. The size of the roller shutter mechanism is added to the height of the fabric and is about 70mm (36mm roller shutter +34mm bottom space).

It is worth paying attention to the depth of the roller blind mechanism, which is approximately 36 mm. It is necessary to take into account the distance from the edge of the roller shutter mechanism to the slope. The opening angle of the window depends on this distance.

To correctly measure the width of roller blinds with flat guides, it is necessary to measure the following parameters:

  1. The width of the opening at the junction of the glazing bead to the double-glazed window (width of the fabric).
  2. Width along the edge of the bead (width of the box).
  3. Bead depth. It must be at least 10 mm, since the fabric should not touch the glass unit.
  4. Bead width. It must be greater than 10 mm, since the minimum width of double-sided tape for guides is 9 mm.
  5. Height. To correctly measure the roller shutter fabric, indicate the size from the joint of the bead to the frame from below to the joint of the bead to the frame from above.

It is worth paying attention to the depth of the roller shutter box, which should be 36 mm and a height of 70 mm. It is necessary to take into account the distance from the edge of the roller shutter mechanism in the slope, since the opening angle of the window depends on this distance.

To do this, it is recommended to have an installation kit with you during measurements to demonstrate the opening to the customer. The decision whether this system is suitable for a particular window is made directly by the measurer.

To measure closed roller blinds with U-shaped guides, you first need to find out the width. For correct measurements, indicate the width from the junction of the bead to the frame on one side, and to the junction of the bead and frame on the other side - this will be the width of the roller shutter along the edge of the guides. The overall width of the roller shutter will be 20 mm wider than the guides.

To correctly measure the height of a fabric roller shutter, indicate the size from the junction of the glazing bead and the frame at the bottom to the junction of the glazing bead and the frame at the top. The distance from the slope on top of the window frame to the junction of the glazing bead and the frame (for fixed windows) must be at least 35 mm.

Designers prefer to use roller blinds in modern home interiors. They are especially suitable for residential premises where active people with a modern outlook on life live. Their advantage is that you can choose any pattern, design and high-quality fabric for production.

Subtleties in calculations

The most practical way to position the control system is so that the cord does not collide with the window handle during operation. The length of the lace of the mechanism is set at the request of the customer.

It is very important to take correct window measurements when choosing roller blinds

, especially if they are fastened with self-tapping screws. The products are completed with a box for the upper part and guide elements - at the request of the buyer. If the curtain box is decorative, it is secured with special fasteners. Measuring roller blinds for plastic windows is not at all difficult. You need to follow the advice of experts, and you will do all the calculations as quickly as possible.

The main thing is maximum care; you need to measure very carefully. In this case, the result will not disappoint you - the curtains will fit the window opening just perfectly.

Increasingly, the interior of a modern apartment is decorated with stylish blinds. They are more practical and easy to use than the curtains we are all used to. When ordering this product, it is very important to know the exact dimensions of the window in order to make a structure of the appropriate size. Many companies provide measuring services for free if you place an order with them. But for those who want to buy a finished product or do not want to pay for the services of a professional to measure, you can complete this task yourself. So, how to measure blinds correctly?

To ensure that the readings taken are as accurate as possible, several specific rules have been identified that can help every novice master:

  • It is recommended to measure blinds using a steel tape measure. It is she who will show the most accurate indicators;
  • You cannot round the result. The resulting figure must be written down exactly to the millimeter.
  • The result is written in a certain sequence: 1 - width, 2 - length. This order is important when ordering, and this is the most common mistake.
  • In order for the blinds to fit perfectly, dimensions must be taken at different levels for each parameter. Very often windows are uneven, and without taking this feature into account, the finished product may rise and fall poorly.

How to measure blinds for plastic windows

Blinds are an excellent solution for a modern interior: they will perfectly protect furniture and wallpaper from bright sun and rapid fading and will decorate any room.
With the right choice of material and type, blinds will successfully serve their owner for many years. The main thing for this is not to make mistakes when measuring. You can measure a window to order blinds yourself, but this process requires precision and accuracy. For those who nevertheless decided to do such work without outside help, the answer to the question: “ How to measure blinds for plastic windows ?”
is provided below.

Mounting methods

It is important to note that the measurement method will differ depending on some details. For starters, this is the type of blinds themselves, but the method of fastening the structure also plays an important role. The mounting method can be:

  • On the wall - when they are attached to the ceiling or wall;
  • In the opening - if the product’s dimensions are equal to the size of the opening;
  • On the sash - the structure is installed directly on the frame.

It is important to remember that in the first two cases it does not matter where the control mechanism is located, on the right or on the left. If mounted on a sash, it must be placed so that the structure does not interfere with the opening of the sash.

Types of blinds by design type

Such light-protective structures are distinguished by structural and design diversity. They can be assembled from different materials:

  • aluminum;
  • fabrics;
  • tree.

According to the shape and type of arrangement of the lamellas, they are divided into:

  • horizontal;
  • vertical;
  • roll

Due to the fact that measurements for each type of such light-protective structure are carried out according to a special scheme, the installation of blinds of different types is usually carried out by specialists. offers not only a large selection of different types of blinds and the production of a specific model for windows of a certain shape, but also high-quality installation.

Measurements of horizontal blinds

Designs with horizontally located lamellas are considered universal due to their convenience and ease of use. How to take measurements correctly?

First of all, you should determine the installation method: in the opening or on the frame. In the first case, the structure can be attached to the ceiling or into the wall. In the second, directly on the sash.

When installing “in the opening”, you can use blinds of different sizes. In this case, you need to measure the width and height of the window opening. When ordering, you must specify the width parameters, which must be equal to the width of the window opening + 1 cm minimum. When fixing the length, indicate the height distance to which at least 5 cm is added.

Horizontal blinds

This type of design is the most common. They were the first to appear on the market, and are still successfully sold. Horizontal structures are practical to use, easy to care for, and they look very harmonious in the interior.

For installation "on the sash"

For this method, it is necessary to take measurements from bead to bead on both sides of the light opening. To avoid any gap left on the sides, it is necessary to add 30-40 mm to the result obtained. To find out the required height, you need to measure the height of the sash itself.

Measurement "in the opening"

Window openings are often uneven, so each indicator must be measured in several places (on the sides and in the center). Of the results obtained, the largest one is considered correct.

The width of the blinds is determined as follows: measure the width of the glass in the light opening and add the size of the seal to the resulting figure. The length is measured in a similar way: measure the length of the glass, add the size of the seal and another 1 spare cm.

In addition, it is worth noting that the cornice of the product is 72 mm larger, so it will protrude 36 mm on both sides. You need to calculate the size so that this cornice does not rest against the walls or hinges. It is also very important to take into account that the design should not interfere with the opening of the sash.

The chain of the lifting mechanism is located, as a rule, on the hinge side, and its size is 2/3 of the length of the window.

For fastening "on the opening"

If you decide to mount the product to the wall, then the dimensions of the blinds themselves should be larger than the dimensions of the window opening. The width of the opening is 10 cm smaller than the finished product, and the buyer chooses their height depending on his preferences. But it is important to note that the size must exceed the length of the opening by 5 cm.

The main rules for measuring blinds

If the owner of apartments and country cottages decides to install blinds on plastic windows with his own hands, then the following rules should be followed when taking measurements:

  • record all measurements with high precision down to the millimeter;
  • When ordering a light-protective structure, indicate first the width and then the length;
  • To take accurate measurements, take measurements in several places, since in most cases the window frame is not ideal in shape.

When taking measurements yourself, it should be taken into account that each type of blinds must use its own technology for taking accurate measurements.

What types of blinds can be installed on plastic windows?

Vertical blinds

This type of blinds is considered a more elegant and sophisticated option compared to horizontal ones. But they can be mounted only in two ways: “on the wall” or “on the opening”. When choosing an installation option, it is important to take into account the shape and size of the window, but the design preferences of the residents of the house are no less important.

Installation "on the opening"

Installing a vertical structure in this way will help hide many of the window's shortcomings: radiators, slanting frames, etc. In addition, this product can be an excellent addition to the interior. It is very important to take into account the protrusion of the window sill; if it is more than 6 cm, then it is worth lengthening the bracket a little.

Measuring “at the opening” involves mounting the structure on a wall or ceiling. In both cases, it is necessary to measure the width and height of the window. You need to add 20 cm to the resulting width result (the product will protrude 10 cm beyond the window on both sides). With the height of the product, everything is a little more complicated. For installation on a wall, you need to add at least 10 cm to this indicator. And if the product will be attached to the ceiling, you need to measure the distance from the window to the ceiling and add the result to the height.

For installation "in the opening"

This installation option allows you to save useful space in the room. In addition, measuring “in the opening” is relevant if there is any furniture near the window. But it is very important that the window is level and the distance between the frames is the same at all levels. Many people prefer this option also because it is cheaper.

It’s very easy to get the desired result; we measure the height and width of the window. Subtract 1 cm from the resulting width, and 2-3 from the height.

Installing roller blinds on a window sash

Installing roller blinds on each window sash has its advantages:

  • you can adjust each roller blind separately,
  • the product is fixed to the sash, which allows you to easily open the window at any angle,
  • Access to the window sill is not limited.

The Mini system, as well as the Uni-1 and Uni-2 cassette systems, are suitable for installation on the sash.

The Uni-1 system is attached to the glazing beads and fits tightly to the glass, so its dimensions are closely related to the dimensions of the window glass: height and width are measured according to the internal dimensions of the glazing bead (along the glass) - Fig. 3a.

For the Uni-2 and Mini systems, when installed on a window sash, measurements are carried out in the same way: the width and height of the roller blinds are measured according to the external dimensions of the glazing beads, Fig. 3b.

How to measure a roller blind when installing it on a sash

Roller blinds

Roller blinds, or Roman blinds in other words, are the most in demand today. They are very practical and easy to use, and most importantly, they take up virtually no space and are ideal for rooms with a small area. Roman blinds do a good job of their intended purpose: with their help it is very convenient to regulate the lighting in the room. If necessary, create twilight by folding the product to the middle, completely darkening the room, or vice versa, open the window and enjoy natural light.

This type is installed in two ways: “in the window opening” or “overlapping”. Another relatively new system is “day-night”. For each installation method, you need to add 0.5 cm to each indicator.

Installation "in the opening"

Important for this setup. To ensure that the window is level, otherwise you need to choose another option. Taking measurements is very simple: as usual, we measure the height of the opening and the width. It is these indicators that are important for the manufacturer.

Overlapping measurement

We measure the width and height of the window. Add 10 cm to the width result, and add 20 cm to the height.

Roman blinds "Day-Night"

In this case, the width of the window must be measured from bead to bead, along their outer edge. The height of the product will be equal to the height of the window along the frame. The result obtained is the necessary indicators.

We take measurements for the production of roller blinds

Light protection of this type can be mounted in a window opening or on a wall. In the first case, the width of the curtain fabric is equal to the width of the opening minus 4 cm, and the height is equal to its height. In the second case, the length of the product must exceed the dimensions of the window by 5 cm or more, and the width can be absolutely any.

If you plan to install cassette roller blinds that are attached directly to the window frame, measurements must be taken especially carefully. The width of the window between the glazing beads will be the width of the future curtain, and its length is equal to the window height plus 20 mm.

Technical blinds

To begin with, it is important to determine what technical blinds actually are. This product is intended for installation on ventilation. It looks quite nice and is not noticeable. When taking measurements, it is worth remembering that the grille must completely cover the ventilation hole.

As a rule, the sizes of air ducts in all rooms are made standard. For industrial facilities this is 150*490, for residential premises (installed in the kitchen or bathroom), this figure is equal to the width 100-150, and the height 150-200.
