The invention of the ballpoint pen can be called a breakthrough of the twentieth century. The quality and speed of writing has reached a new level. Today this miracle of thought costs a penny. These same pens can be found in the most unexpected places: in a pajama pocket, in the kitchen cabinet among spoons and forks, in the gap between the back and seat of the sofa. And this pen began to flow. It’s good if this happened in a child’s pencil case. What if in a light leather bag or on a leather sofa? And if at all in the pocket of a new coat? It is difficult to remove ink from fabric, leather, and leatherette. It's difficult, but it's possible.
What is most often used
In order to cope with the task and remove ink from a ballpoint pen, you can use both special cleaning products and traditional methods, which have also proven themselves very well. Here are the most effective products:
- Dishwashing detergent (will only be effective if used immediately);
- Products containing alcohol, for example, vodka, ethyl or medical alcohol;
- Glycerol;
- Milk;
- Nail polish remover or acetone;
- Laundry soap;
- Hair fixation spray.
And, of course, to make your task easier, don’t forget to stock up on a sponge, a medium-soft brush, cotton pads and a soft, dry cloth.
Acetone and other risky or ineffective ink stain removers
You should be aware that there are methods for removing pen stains that can remove the ink stain, but there is a risk of damaging the product:
- Soap. If leatherette, eco-leather and leather are rubbed with soap and washed off with water, the result will be noticeable provided that the marks from the handle are fresh; old stains cannot be removed with soap. It is also worth remembering that genuine leather products do not really like water.
- Acetone, solvents and nail polish remover. This product sometimes contains acetone, which can remove pen stains, but the surface of both leatherette and natural leather will be damaged, and therefore it is better not to use it. A liquid without acetone and alcohol will not help remove ink.
- Makeup removers. Strange as it may sound, there are some sources that advise using a makeup remover to scrub off ink. Perhaps because these products often used to contain alcohol. Modern makeup removers do not contain alcohol.
- A mixture of citric acid and water. Citric acid or lemon juice diluted with water will make the ink mark looser and lighter. To completely wipe off the stain, you will need to leave a cotton pad soaked in an acid solution on the contaminated surface for 15-20 minutes, and then vigorously rub the stain with a rough sponge several times. This procedure may damage the surface of the product.
We use alcohol
If you don’t know how to wipe a pen off your skin, then one of the easiest and most effective methods is to use alcohol. This substance has been used to remove various contaminants since ancient times. By the way, you can also use cologne or perfume instead. All you have to do is soak a cotton swab in the liquid and begin to gently work it onto the stain. Moreover, try not to touch the “clean areas”, since the alcohol will absorb the ink, and, accordingly, the rest of the fabric may be stained.
It’s worth noting right away that alcohol is one of the best products for cleaning, since it not only neutralizes stains in the shortest possible time, but also does not harm the leather upholstery at all, unlike the same modern stain removers.
It is best used if the sofa has a light shade. You will need to remove stains as follows: soak a suede cloth generously in fatty milk, wring it out lightly and apply it to the problem area. After about 5 minutes, you will need to try to wipe the stain, the movements should be careful and not too intense, otherwise the ink filler will penetrate even deeper. As the rag becomes stained, you will need to rinse it and re-soak it in milk.
The only drawback of this method is that it will take you a lot of time to remove the stain. But at the same time you will definitely not spoil the surface of the upholstery.
What to do if ink gets on your leather sofa
A leather sofa is not gloves or a bag. It won't be possible to wash it. Leaked ink will have to be removed on site. By the way, doing this is not so difficult even on white skin. If the product is tested on an inconspicuous area and works well, you can safely use it. You can try citric acid. At the end of the procedure, moisten a clean rag in a soapy solution and thoroughly rinse the area that was cleaned with it. You need to dry your leather sofa naturally. There can be no talk of any hairdryers or blower stoves.
Nail polish remover
Today you can find this product in absolutely every apartment, since not a single woman can imagine her life without a manicure. Keep in mind that this liquid is essentially a solvent, so removing a ballpoint pen stain with it will not be a problem. You will need to apply it in the same way, using a cotton swab, otherwise a huge stain covered with small flakes of loose skin will form on your favorite leather sofa in the shortest possible time. The only advice is that before you begin the actual treatment, do not forget to walk over the problem area with a damp cloth, and then blot it all with a disposable napkin. And after this you can start applying acetone.
Keep in mind that it is not safe to remove stains in this way, since there is a possibility that the cleaned area may become lighter after such exposure. That is why it is necessary to resort to such methods only in extreme cases.
Homemade solutions
You can remove handles from dermantine items using natural remedies. Their use gives good results, especially if the ink is fairly fresh.
These are solutions prepared at home using ingredients that are available in every family. Using such products will be the best and safest option.
- Salt. This method is perfect when you need to remove pen marks from clothes or a sofa. Add a little table salt to a regular soap solution. The resulting mixture must be applied to the stained area, rub the mark from the pen and leave in this form for two hours. When the stain disappears, remove any remaining salt with a damp cloth and wipe dry.
- Soda. Will get rid of stains caused by ink. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of baking soda in half a glass of warm water. Dampen a rag or sponge with this solution and scrub the surface. Rinse off any remaining baking soda with water and wipe dry.
- Lemon and citric acid. Dampen a cloth with lemon juice and wipe the dirty area. This process must be repeated until traces of contamination are completely removed. Citric acid is also used for these purposes. The scheme is the same. Apply a little citric acid to a cotton pad or rag and wipe off the dirt. Residues of citric acid should be washed off with the prepared soap solution and wiped dry. If a trace remains, apply the acid a second time and repeat all the steps again.
- Vinegar. You can use vinegar instead of lemon juice. The method of its use is the same as in the previous case. After removing the stain, the remaining vinegar must be washed off with water.
- Lemon juice with milk. Take some lemon juice and milk and mix them in equal proportions. Apply the resulting mixture to the pen stain using a regular napkin or cotton pad and leave for 30–40 minutes. Wipe off any remaining mixture with a clean sponge or cloth.
Precautionary measures
Even when using these simple remedies, the following precautions must be observed:
- To keep the item in good condition and not spoil it, before removing marks from the pen, it is advisable to conduct an experiment on a hidden area of the item.
- To avoid the use of chemical solvents, it is better to begin the cleaning process immediately after ink hits the surface of the material.
- Use only high quality chemical solvents from reputable manufacturers.
- Do not leave chemicals on for too long to prevent them from being absorbed into the fabric.
- After removing the contamination with a chemical agent, wipe the surface of the material with soapy water and wipe dry. Treat your skin with glycerin to prevent negative effects and restore its softness.
- When using some products, it is necessary to use additional means of protection. So, when using a melamine sponge, it is necessary to take into account that melamine is a very toxic substance. To avoid its harmful effects, you should use a protective mask.
- When choosing a method for removing pen ink from leatherette, you need to take into account the color of the surface.
Laundry soap
You can also use it to wash pens and other ink from leatherette. But the result will only be if just a couple of minutes have passed since the contamination. You will need to generously lather a medium-hard brush and carefully walk over the damaged area. At the same time, do not forget to constantly remove excess foam with a regular cotton pad or napkin.
How to remove stains using different means
Citric acid is freely available for sale; you will probably find a bag in your kitchen cabinet. Acids generally dissolve many substances, citric acid is a godsend. Therefore, we can safely use it against ballpoint pen marks on leatherette surfaces. You need to prepare an unpainted foam sponge. Prepare a steep solution of water and citric acid.
Dip the sponge into it, carefully, without touching it with your fingers or while wearing gloves. Rub the stain. Wash off any remaining acid and ink with another sponge soaked in soapy water. If you can wash the product, it is better to do so. Sometimes citric acid does not help after a single use. It is not forbidden to repeat these actions a second or even a third time.
We prepare special solutions
If you are faced with a similar problem and do not know how to remove the pen, do not despair, the following compounds will help you cope with the task:
- Mix a small amount of any dishwashing detergent (about 10 ml) with a teaspoon of soda and dilute it all with water (about 100 ml). The composition will need to be applied to the stain with a brush, and then rinsed thoroughly;
- Stain removal can also be done using the following solution. Pour 10 grams of glycerin with ammonia (the proportions should be 1:5). Apply this composition to the problem area and leave it to act for 10-15 minutes, and then remove the residue with a damp cloth;
- A mixture of soda and lemon juice also has a good effect, but you should resort to this method only if all other means have failed. This composition is very caustic and harsh, so after treatment with it there is also a possibility of lightening the fabric. But, nevertheless, many housewives periodically use this particular composition, because even if a lightened area suddenly appears on the sofa, it can easily be painted over with a special spray paint, which will not differ in any way from the main tone of the material.
Now you know how to clean a leather sofa and how to remove ink stains. Since all the methods described above are more than effective, you can use any of them that you like. Well, if you still haven’t managed to get rid of the dirt, or you simply doubt your abilities, it would be much wiser to turn to a dry cleaner for help.

How to clean a handle from a leather sofa? We use special chemistry
Household chemicals, which can be used for natural and artificial materials, will help remove traces of ink from leather. The method of application depends on the manufacturer; it is printed on the label or instructions included in the package. The products are produced in the form of sprays, liquids, pens with applicators. They are sold in offline and online household chemical stores.
For example, chemicals in liquid form are applied to a tampon or cloth, after which the skin is cleansed in a circular motion. The components of the stain remover penetrate the structure of the material, breaking down fresh and old stains. If the area of contamination is large, then the napkin should be changed as the ink is absorbed. 30-40 seconds after application, the area should be wiped with a dry or damp sponge to remove chemical components. Never use products intended for artificial leather on natural leather, and vice versa, otherwise the material may become deformed, fade, etc.
Using Soap
Soap dries this type of upholstery less; it is advisable to use it for fresh stains. It is recommended to apply a little liquid soap or dish soap to a damp sponge, then treat the contaminated area and rinse with water. You can repeat until the mark disappears.
Soap
The easiest way to get rid of pen marks is to prepare a soap solution. This method will only work if the contamination is completely fresh. In addition, you should use it carefully when cleaning natural leather, as it can become deformed from excess moisture.
You need to take shavings of laundry soap and a small amount of water. Then mix them to obtain a concentrated soap solution. Apply the mixture to the ink stain and rub gently. After traces of the paste disappear, wash off the remaining solution with a damp cloth and wipe dry with a cloth.
Chemicals for removing ink from skin
Chemical agents will help erase pen marks from a leather surface:
- Synthetic detergents. To remove pen paste from your couch, apply dishwashing liquid to the brush. Then the brush or contaminated area is lightly moistened with water. Use a brush to wipe the ink; do not press too hard to avoid scratching the surface. Then the treated area should be rinsed with warm water.
- Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) will help remove fresh ink stains from the skin. To do this, wipe the stain with a sponge or cotton wool soaked in alcohol until it becomes clean.
Ink removal products for leather
The product must be cleaned immediately after ink gets on its surface, otherwise it will be much more difficult to remove the stain. The skin absorbs paint quite quickly, so you need to start processing immediately!
Before removing stains, it is worth testing the selected product on an area of the sofa hidden from prying eyes. Don't be so sure about the effectiveness and safety of the substance, because it can easily ruin beautiful furniture.

Features of removing pens from natural and artificial leather
If your favorite leather sofa, wallet or bag has suffered from ink stains, do not rush and immediately resort to the services of cleaning companies: often, with a little effort, you can successfully deal with this problem yourself. At the same time, it makes no fundamental difference which pen (ballpoint, fountain or gel) the ink impression was made.
Important! After detecting contamination from a handle on a leather or eco-leather product, it is important to begin removing it as soon as possible, since leather tends to very quickly absorb dyes that get on it.
In order to wipe a handle from natural or artificial leather, for example, from a leather chair, you need to know a few basic rules:
- Before using any method that will be used to remove ink stains, it is important to test it on a small and inconspicuous area of skin.
- You need to start scrubbing off the dirt with softer, gentler ingredients. You should use more aggressive techniques only if the first option did not work,
- It is advisable to apply substances for rubbing the skin exclusively on the impression from the pen itself, while trying not to touch the area around it.
- The substance used to wipe off ink stains should be washed off with a damp soft cloth.
- After the problem has been eliminated, it is recommended to wipe the skin with glycerin or castor oil. This will prevent it from drying out and cracking in the treated area,
- Drying the skin after treatment using a hairdryer is strictly prohibited, as this can cause them to dry out and crack. Leather or leatherette should dry on its own at room temperature,
- When using specialized chemical stain removers, it is important to strictly observe the exposure time for the ink residue and not exceed the time interval specified in the instructions for use of the specific stain remover. Otherwise, the chemical will corrode the skin and create a hole where it interacts with the skin.
It is also important to know that impressions from a ballpoint pen are a little more difficult to wipe off than from fountain or gel pens, primarily due to the oil contained in their ink.
Leatherette
In the modern world, almost every person will probably have leatherette products. If for some reason they were damaged by ink, then you can wipe the paste off the pen from the leatherette using the following methods:
Gentle substances (they should be used primarily to remove ink from eco-leather) | Substances that are more aggressive in their composition | The most effective, but aggressive in composition and professional chemicals |
Soap solution (effective only if the ink has not yet dried) | Soda + ammonia (1 tsp soda + 100 ml ammonia). | Hair fixation spray. |
Saline solution | Soda + lemon juice. | Nail polish remover (necessarily does not contain acetone in its composition). |
Lemon juice (especially effective in removing stains from white eco-leather) | Hydrogen peroxide is effective in removing ink stains from light leatherette; it can leave streaks on dark eco-leather, so its use is not recommended). | Antistatic spray. |
Alcohol-containing liquids (vodka, alcohol, lotions) | Auto chemicals (for cleaning the car interior). | White Spirit. |
Stationery tape (this option cannot be used when removing dirt from soft eco-leather) | Melamine sponge. | Classic washing mixture: salt (1 tsp) + dishwashing gel (10 ml) + water (100 ml). |
Dry mustard (effective for removing ink from red leatherette). | Udalix Ultra – stain remover pencil. | |
Leather Stain Remover is a special stain remover for leather products. |
When wiping pen stains from artificial leather, do not use the following substances and objects:
- preparations containing chlorine, alkali or acids,
- synthetic preparations, including petroleum products,
- machine oils,
- turpentine,
- bleaches,
- metal sponges, any sandpaper, pumice stone and brushes with stiff bristles.
If you follow these simple recommendations, wiping the handle off a sofa whose upholstery is made of leatherette will not cause any difficulties.
Genuine Leather
The techniques for wiping off handle paste from eco-leather products are not much different from the options used in the case of genuine leather. However, in this case it is important to remember:
- natural leather cannot be overly wet, so you need to exclude rubbing options that contain water, and also remember that it is better to remove these substances from the surface of a leather product after use, not with a wet cloth, but with a damp cloth,
- When cleaning the surface of a leather product, it is also important to start with softer and more gentle items, such as tape, salt, glycerin. And only if they cannot cope with the task, should one move on to substances that are more aggressive in their composition,
- Before using any stain removers, it is important to carefully read the instructions for their use, find out whether they are applicable to leather products, and strictly observe the exposure time,
- After using any options for wiping the handle from the surface of a product, for example, a leather chair made of genuine leather, it is imperative to lubricate it with Vaseline or glycerin.
Safety Tips
In order for a thing to serve for a long time and please its owners with its appearance, it requires proper care. Let's consider the main points for the long-term service of a leather sofa.
Basic actions:
- The furniture is not suitable for kitchen ceremonies; you should not eat or drink tea on it, especially if it is white leather.
- Do not neglect protective equipment for such products, despite their high cost, it will be more difficult to buy a new item.
- When removing contaminants, be careful and always test in a hidden area.
- If the design of the apartment allows it, then it is better to use protective covers.
- When choosing a location for furniture, it is worth considering that skin does not like temperature changes, high humidity and direct sunlight. Wiping products should not be done with a wet cloth.
- Every two months it is worth rubbing the surface with olive or castor oil.
- Do not use rough materials when cleaning the material.
The main rule that will help you quickly and effectively remove ink from leatherette is to start cleaning immediately as soon as you notice or notice contamination. The deeper the paste is absorbed into the pores of the material, the more difficult it is to remove. Old stains are difficult to clean without damaging the skin.
If ink has leaked onto artificial leather, you urgently need to sprinkle the stain with table salt. The salt will absorb excess paste and prevent it from spreading. Natural household products are no less effective than expensive chemical stain removers.

Chemicals
To remove a ballpoint pen from leatherette or leather, you can use a huge number of chemicals, but the most gentle among them are stain removers . Modern products contain substances that do not harm the skin of your hands and do not affect the paint. These products show excellent results in the fight against old and deep-seated stains.
Caution : Before you begin cleaning your skin, it is important to take precautions.
- For example, when working with chemicals, you must wear gloves, since the skin on your hands is the driest and most sensitive.
- The stain remover is applied only according to the instructions.
- Work only with cotton swabs or cotton pads.
- After applying the solution to the stain, time must pass, usually it is 5-10 minutes.
- All chemical residues are washed off with warm water, and then the surface of the skin is wiped dry.
- Even if the stains are old and deep, you can wipe them off using stain removers.
Now you know how you can easily clean leather, natural or artificial, from ink stains and traces of ballpoint and gel pens.

Scotch
For thick natural leather, cleaning with tape is suitable. For example, if marks from a pen are on a leather bag.
It is necessary to cut a piece of tape so that it most closely matches the size of the ink stain. If the tape is much larger, there is a risk of damage to the material. After this, you should glue the cut piece onto the paste marks, press tightly and carefully peel off. Only the vague outlines of the former spot should remain on the skin. To completely get rid of them, you need to carefully rub the dirt with a regular eraser.
This method cannot be used to clean leatherette, especially thin leather. The soft covering can be easily damaged when the tape is pulled off.
