What kind of wood are cribs made from? Which crib is better, beech or birch? What is the difference and can you tell me where you bought yours? Beds of unusual shapes

Of course, choosing children's furniture is a difficult and responsible task, since it must be not only functional, but also safe for the baby's health. It is especially important to choose the right crib, since in the first months of life the child spends a lot of time in it, and the most popular products today include models of cribs made of natural wood. The thing is that a crib made of natural wood is not only an aesthetically attractive, but also an environmentally friendly type of children's furniture.

The main advantages and disadvantages of cribs made of natural wood

The undoubted advantages of wooden cribs, compared to similar products made from MDF, chipboard, metal and plastic, include:

  • durability, strength and reliability;
  • resistance to mechanical damage (if we are talking about models made of hard wood, for example, beech or birch);
  • environmental safety and naturalness;
  • ease of care;
  • attractive appearance due to the beautiful texture of wood;
  • quite affordable price.

As for the disadvantages of cribs for newborns made of natural wood, some models, especially those made of soft wood, for example, pine, may begin to creak and dry out over time, which is especially typical when the wood is processed poorly. However, these disadvantages can be avoided by choosing a model made of durable material - in particular, birch or beech.

Advantages of natural wood for children's rooms

The nursery is one of the most important rooms in the house. Every parent tries to give their child only the best. This also applies to the arrangement of a children's room.

One of the main requirements for children's furniture is safety and environmental friendliness. Furniture made from natural wood is ideally suited to these criteria. It combines many excellent qualities and has virtually no drawbacks.

The main advantages of children's wooden furniture include:

  • hypoallergenic;
  • the ability of wood to pass air;
  • resistance to temperature and humidity changes;
  • resistance to rotting, mold and bacteria;
  • pleasant aroma;
  • the health benefits that wood brings after minimal processing in production;
  • high quality products;
  • aesthetic appearance.

In addition to the above reasons, many people prefer to buy children's furniture made of natural wood due to its versatility. It is possible to choose a good option from a huge variety of sizes and shapes, designs and colors. In addition, solid wood furniture has exceptional durability and wear resistance, which is especially important for a children's room.

Birch cots

Wood is durable, but at the same time flexible, so it lends itself well to sanding and polishing, which allows you to create a perfectly smooth surface of the product.

Also, this material is very durable and hypoallergenic, so it is excellent for creating a variety of children's furniture, including cribs. And thanks to the attractive texture of birch, cribs made from this solid wood are not only beautiful, but also universal in design, so they look great in a children's room decorated in almost any style - from classic to modern.

The most famous manufacturers of baby cribs made from solid birch include the Mozhginsky timber plant, as well as “Red Star” (Mozhga).

Socionics and other typologies

Successfully choosing a crib for your baby is the most responsible and important step for young parents. The most important thing is that the crib is safe, comfortable and durable. The baby will not only rest in the crib, but also spend a certain period of time.

In addition, the crib will serve as protection and shelter for the child for the time when he happens to be left without parental supervision, even for a short time.

Today there is a wide selection of children's furniture, including cribs. The main thing for mothers is to take the right step by choosing a high-quality and safe crib, which is not very expensive.

What do you need to know about the materials from which cribs are made? The main thing is wooden cribs made of birch, oak, aspen, beech, pine, fir. There are also combined cribs - wood and chipboard, fiberboard and other materials from wood waste.

Now they have already begun to produce children's cribs from metal.

Naturally, wooden cribs are preferable. The main Russian manufacturers of wooden cribs are the Red Star factory in Mozhga. By summing up their advice, you can gather a general opinion about the advantages of wooden cribs.

Natural wood - pine, alder and other tree species - is the key to health for your child. It would also be nice if the crib was made of hardwood trees: beech, cherry, birch. Cribs are also made from fir, aspen and oak.

What type of tree does your little one prefer? Children's cribs made from aspen are not inexpensive. But this wood is very soft and over time it will become scratched and lose its natural appearance. Pine furniture is durable and beautiful, has a pleasant texture. Birch cots are also considered durable and strong.

As for beech, such cribs do not scratch, are durable and do not lose their natural appearance. Just like pine, beech has a beautiful texture and looks great in the interior.

In addition to their environmental features, wooden cribs are selected based on design and use. There are cribs with legs, on fixed wheels, and there are also rocking beds. Cots with two drawers for children's things are comfortable.

There are also cribs with a chest of drawers and a folding changing table.

The covering of a baby crib must certainly comply with GOST, and the crib must have a special certificate of compliance with sanitary standards. Special and ordinary varnishes are used in coatings. Which will hide the inevitable damage and scratches in the future.

In general, wooden cribs are durable, beautiful, useful and safe. In children's goods store, you can always find suitable cribs for your little one from such well-known manufacturers as Kubanlesstroy, Mozhga , Gandylyan.

Beech cribs for newborns

Beech is one of the most durable and hardest types of wood - it is very resistant to mechanical damage (for example, scratches) and does not lose its attractive appearance over many years of use. Due to this, a beech crib can serve more than one baby.

In general, a crib made of solid beech is distinguished by its reliability and quality, and also fits perfectly into the interior of any children's room. To a large extent, the aesthetic appeal of such products is due to the fact that they are easy to paint and process - the paint and varnish coatings (of course, hypoallergenic and safe for the health of the child) lie perfectly flat on the surface.

Some of the most famous manufacturers of beech wood cribs include Gandilyan (Gandylyan), “Lel” (Kubanlesstroy) and also “Red Star” (Mozhga).

To summarize, it can be noted that cribs made of natural wood for newborns are an excellent choice for parents who care about the health of their baby and want to choose for him not only high-quality and attractive, but also environmentally friendly furniture. And a wide range of crib models made from solid wood (with a longitudinal, transverse or universal swing pendulum, with or without drawers, with wheels, with height-adjustable sides and bed, and so on) will make it easy to choose a product that will suit everyone requirements.

How to choose a wooden crib

The design can use metal or plastic. Metal is used in structural structural elements, plastic is used for decoration and weight reduction. Please read the product specification carefully.

Modern plastic looks like wood, make no mistake. Check the sustainability of the purchase. This factor is important for safety. Inspect your purchase. The wood should not have cracks or nicks. Pay attention to the darkening of the wood, ask the seller if they relate to the natural wood structure.

Choose an option that does not have dark spots, has an even wood structure, without knots or curls in the fibers. Find out what varnish is used to treat the wood or wicker. What kind of paint are they painted? A quality product has a smooth surface. Wood is an environmentally friendly material, make sure it is treated with safe substances.

Pay attention to the quality of processing and varnishing. Evaluate the quality of seam gluing and the tightness of the decorative overlays. The service life of the product and the safety of its use depend on this.

After delivery, inspect the purchase; the wood is elastic, but damage may occur if transported carelessly. If you bought a prefabricated structure, entrust the assembly to specialists. Make sure it is equipped with the necessary spare parts.

About beauty and benefits

The return of fashion for wood products is quite justified. Perhaps this is akin to the tendency to prefer clothing made from natural fabrics. Naturally, first of all we are talking about environmental friendliness. If forests are called the lungs of the planet, then the same concept can be safely applied to wooden furniture in a room.

It is impossible not to pay attention to the fact that even in large bedrooms, where there are double wooden beds and other solid furniture, one can breathe much easier and more freely than in rooms with furniture made from the same MDF, fiberboard and chipboard. Why? Because even a cut down and processed tree remains a natural air conditioner. Such furniture renews, refreshes and purifies the air in the room. In addition, it aromatizes it well, retaining and emitting a light resinous smell for a long time after purchase. This is especially true for pine and other conifers.

Even the simplest double beds made of solid wood in combination with the rest of the furniture will give the bedroom a unique coziness. Wood is loved for its so-called “innate” decoration, or more simply, for those bizarre patterns and designs that nature itself has endowed it with. Thanks to this, a wooden bed, and furniture in principle, often does not even need additional decorations.

The tree generously gives off its natural warmth, which cannot be ignored. It never cools down (for example, when airing) like other materials, and this is also a tribute to comfort. Light falls on wooden surfaces in a special way and is reflected from them with a slight glow.

Taking advantage of all these unique properties of wood, designers and craftsmen in modern factories create beautiful double beds made of wood that are more than worthy of becoming a cozy family bed. Solid wood is often combined with elegant forged elements, inlays, veneering are used for decoration, etc. And a bed decorated with a canopy is a completely separate matter, because the special romance of this detail is difficult to dispute.

Materials

Children's furniture, like adult furniture, is made from various materials. Metals and plastics are used in the design. It is made from both wood and artificial materials derived from wood, for example, fibreboards. These materials have their advantages and disadvantages.

Metal inserts are durable and retain their shape for a long time. The plasticity of the material allows the use of bold design solutions, the inclusion of decorations and technological elements in the design of furniture. The disadvantages include the weight of the furniture. Metal is a cold and hard material. This will cause discomfort to the baby. Use additional softening and insulation.

Plastic fragments . The plasticity of the material and its low cost make this a popular choice. Plastic is easy to process, paint and decorate. This type of material is less environmentally friendly and durable. Such furniture can be easily moved around the room. Pay attention to its stability. If the furniture is installed incorrectly, the child may turn it over.

Wood

When organizing a sleeping place, pay attention to the wood from which the structure is made. Trees release special biologically active substances into the environment - phytoncides. These compounds are natural selective antibiotics. They suppress fungi, viruses and pathogens.

Protection extends to everything near the tree. Furniture made of wood also releases phytoncides. Less useful substances are released from a wooden structure than from a living tree. The action of phytoncides is gentle and extended over time. Don't expect instant results.

The most powerful phytoncidal properties are common oak and Norway maple. The wood of these types of wood is durable and pleasant to look at. They are traditionally used to make furniture. Different species of these trees differ from each other, but still have a beneficial effect on the human body.

Spruce, pine, birch and walnut wood is easier to process than oak wood. The appearance of products made from these trees is attractive. Additional painting of furniture is not required.

Pay attention to juniper , its structure is distinguished by its aesthetic value and is used for decorative finishing of finished products. Juniper, when ingested, has an adverse effect. Make sure that during the period when teeth are being cut, the child does not chew on the crib.

Linden, larch, black alder and cedar. These trees belong to species with weak phytoncide. When choosing furniture from these materials, pay primary attention to the strength of the product and aesthetic characteristics.

Sleeping in a wooden crib is natural. The child falls asleep more calmly and gets proper rest. Products made from rare wood species are expensive. Choose a pine crib finished with valuable veneer. This option will provide strength, appearance and an affordable price.

Which wood is best to choose for a bed?

It is worth noting that wood, as a material, has excellent strength indicators, and at the same time it is perfectly processable - it can be bent, cut, glued, painted and performed other technological operations. For general convenience, carpenters have formed a generally accepted classification based on strength and hardness. And as this classification states, wood can be divided into three main categories - soft, hard and very hard.

  • Soft woods - pine, spruce, aspen, cedar, linden and thuja.
  • Hardwoods include oak, ash, beech, walnut, birch, and maple.
  • Very hard wood: boxwood, dogwood, yew, hornbeam and acacia.

The most common tree species from which furniture is made are: pine, spruce, beech, alder, oak and ash. It is worth noting that almost every furniture store will offer you furniture from a standard set of wood: pine, birch, beech or oak, occasionally supplementing it with ash. Therefore, we will tell you about these four main types of wood, beds from which you can find in our online store catalog.

Coniferous wood for making beds

Conifers are soft species, their dry density is low, and therefore they are prone to cracking when mechanical loads are placed on them. But as practice and research show, this fact in no way affects the level of consumer demand for beds made of coniferous wood. Such popularity among buyers is ensured by several factors, and the first of them is the prices for beds made of coniferous solid wood. If you make some comparisons with other types of wood, you will definitely notice that coniferous furniture models have the most affordable prices on the market. Another undeniable advantage of furniture made of coniferous wood is the antiseptic properties of the resins with which all wood is impregnated. Therefore, when buying a bed made of coniferous wood, you not only get a light aroma of coniferous forest in the room, but you disinfect the air in the room and also repel wood pests.

Solid pine for making a bed

By its own nature, solid pine has healing and healing properties. Due to this fact, pine has been used by carpenters in the production of beds for a long time. The reliability and strength of the solid pine bed structure is the result of the wood being saturated with resins, which were given to it by Mother Nature herself. In addition to this fact, like any coniferous species, pine is able to resist the negative influence of mice and other rodents, insects, pathogenic viruses and harmful microbes. And if we talk about the price, then it is extremely affordable and is perfect for almost anyone who is on a budget but wants to buy a high-quality bed made of solid wood.

Solid birch for making a bed

The widely used material for furniture production is resistant to any damage and, with proper care, will last for decades, but requires special treatment that will protect it from fungal infection. The array is highly durable and has a uniform whitish tint. Birch makes unusual beds that are comfortable and warm. The furniture looks beautiful and stylish, and has an unlimited service life with proper care. Birch solid wood for making a whole bed or for its individual elements. Durable solid birch of a whitish hue is used for the manufacture of designer bedroom furniture, which is characterized by special warmth and comfort.

Solid beech for making a bed

Solid beech is a hard and dense material, but it is worth noting that it has a strength that is lower than that of solid oak. The unique wood pattern of beech does not have pronounced annual rings and is not at all similar to the structure of all other species. The color of its wood varies from white with a hint of yellow to pinkish-red. Beech beds are durable, presentable and can last for a long period. Solid beech can bend significantly due to the load caused by the heavy weight, and also due to changes in air humidity in the room, it warps. But if the room has stable climatic conditions, then wood treated with special means can last a very long time. Manufacturers consider solid beech beds to be in the middle price category, and some call it a cheap analogue of oak. The beech tree represents spiritual strength and dignity. When buying a beech bed, you need to remember that this tree does not like very dry air; it should not be placed near central heating systems or a fireplace. You should also control the temperature difference; beech does not like this.

Solid oak for making a bed

Solid oak is an extremely durable, hard and strong material that can easily withstand any adverse external factors. On a radial section of an oak trunk, large pith rays and light sapwood are clearly visible. Oak wood is extremely durable, moisture-resistant, and resistant to fungal diseases and harmful insects. Oak is the most widely used hardwood in the manufacture of solid wood furniture, due to its excellent combination of strength and beautiful texture. If an oak tree lies in water for a long time (several decades), its wood acquires a rare dark purple color with a green tint. Oak wood is difficult to polish and requires equipment with highly hardened cutters. And there is an opinion among designers that oak in the interior helps create a special atmosphere for restoring strength and energy. A bed made of solid oak is classic, durable, and wear-resistant. The only drawback is the price; a product made from such wood is considered elite, and not accessible to everyone.

Types of beds made of solid wood.

Have you already been able to choose the material that suits you for the bed? In this case, you need to choose the bed itself.

A single bed is, first of all, a sleeping place for arranging small rooms where one person lives, so there is no need for a large bed. As a rule, such beds are made from inexpensive material, for example, from pine, which, in addition to its quality, is also low in cost, so literally anyone can afford such a purchase.

Double beds made of natural solid wood are options for a couple's bedroom. A bed made of natural solid wood allows you to fully rest and relax, because since the bed is large, it will ensure a healthy and sound sleep. Typically, such products are decorated with decorative carvings to highlight the appearance and sophistication of the entire space. If the bedroom is decorated in a minimalist style, then alder or bleached oak is used due to its interesting appearance and very affordable cost of the material.

When a new addition is expected to the family, a whole bunch of different pleasant problems and troubles appear. And one of the main questions that young parents have to decide is how to choose a crib for a newborn. It is clear that if there is already a child in the family, then the parents have experience in such matters. And the crib was probably preserved, unless they gave it to their relatives or friends. And for those for whom all this is the first time, when choosing a crib you should remember a few simple rules.

A crib should be comfortable and environmentally friendly.

In the first 2-3 months, while the child is sedentary, it is better if he sleeps in a special cradle basket. It is small, cozy and the baby likes it much more at first. But the crib is still a large open space for him, which can scare him at first. And for mothers, such a cradle is very convenient, since it has handles, which makes it easy to move it from place to place and even take it with you for a walk. But still, such a cradle cannot fully replace a crib, and, depending on the rate of development of your baby, after 5-7 months it will be too small for him.

Which crib to choose for a newborn? After all, in the children's store there are so many of them, in a variety of colors and models, that it is very difficult for young parents to decide. Therefore, it is better to decide on the model in advance before going to buy a crib. When you come to a children's store, you can focus on choosing the best option for the selected model, significantly saving your time.

A crib for a newborn should, of course, be beautiful, but most importantly, durable and safe.

And it should also be comfortable. And for both parents and children. To comply with this, the surface of all wooden surfaces of the crib should be smooth.

To make it convenient to lay the child down, so that he does not fall out when he learns to stand, the height of the side of the crib above the level of the mattress should be at least 45 cm. And the distance between the vertical slats should not exceed 5 cm, so that the child cannot stick his leg through and injure himself.

You should check the reliability of the fastening of the bottom and sides, and also make sure that the mechanism is present and operational, which must reliably fix the lowering bottom and sides of the crib.

Solid beech or birch: which is better?

Solid beech can compete with oak wood in terms of reliability and strength, but it is distinguished by the high microporosity of the solid and, as a consequence, moisture absorption. Therefore, beech products are not suitable for outdoor use or as finishing in bathrooms. Beech wood is easy to process, its wood bends well under the influence of steam, but it is very difficult to polish. Beechwood is often used to make bentwood furniture, taking advantage of its flexibility, such as Viennese chairs. Beech is an excellent material for interior decoration; it makes good stair steps, parquet, and panels. Birch is the most common source of material for the production of almost all types of furniture. Due to its durable qualities, interior items made from solid birch are resistant to physical influences. Birch wood is similar in most respects to solid beech, but in general, solid beech will be superior to solid birch in hardness and strength. The beauty of birch fibers can only be compared with those of oak or beech. Karelian birch is famous for its particularly durable properties, unusual texture and wood with a pink tint.

Wooden beds made of oak

As soon as you imagine furniture made of noble and aristocratic oak, for some reason you immediately remember classic English interiors. Oak furniture, bookshelves in the ceiling, massive tables and chairs, wooden panels on the walls... Or the apartments of rulers and monarchs with huge oak beds and appropriate fittings and furnishings come to mind.

Oak, as we remember, is a hard species. Undoubtedly, oak is of a much higher class than pine or even birch. Solid oak beds immediately stand out from the rest, attracting attention. They are quite impressive and sometimes even a little strict. But this is a tribute to classic style and a certain taste that is beyond the concept of “fashionable”.

Oak definitely gives furniture status; it has had this privilege since ancient times. Therefore, furnishing a room with objects made of solid oak is a serious decision. It should be taken into account that some elements of modern interiors will no longer fit into such a room.

If you imagine all oak furniture and beds made from solid oak wood exclusively in a dark color, then you are somewhat mistaken. This characteristic shade is given to oak by a special processing method - staining. Wood is kept in water for a long time before being made into furniture. Afterwards it dries and acquires the color familiar to us. In fact, in its “natural” color it is yellow-brown with a slight greenish tint.

Beds made of hardwood, such as oak, are characterized by reliability, durability and high resistance to damage. Of course, this does not mean that such furniture can be treated with negligence. Any wooden furniture requires care and careful handling.

Successfully choosing a crib for your baby is the most responsible and important step for young parents. The most important thing is that the crib is safe, durable and comfortable. The baby will not only sleep in it, but also spend a certain period of time. A crib will also serve as shelter and protection for the baby at that moment when he has to be left without parental supervision, even for a short time.

The most common sign by which many women determine the onset of pregnancy is a delay in menstruation. But this sign is not the main one. The delay may be due to some gynecological diseases, and in some women, spotting similar to menstruation may be observed during the first months of pregnancy.

Psychologists believe that in families in which they prepare for pregnancy, children develop better both emotionally and physically. A woman’s body serves as the baby’s first cradle for 9 long months, and he needs comfortable conditions for his maturation. Therefore, the expectant mother should monitor her health and determine before pregnancy whether she is physiologically ready to bear a baby. Namely, you need to undergo a full medical examination.

Are sweets good for an expectant mother? Before answering this question, it’s worth asking it a little differently - who are they useful for? As you know, sweets are not the best way to relieve hunger. But sweets are a good way to improve your well-being, and this is true. Considering this fact, sweets will not cause trouble even for an expectant mother. The rule here is simple - everything should be consumed in moderation.

Hello, dear parents! The bed is one of the greatest inventions of mankind. It is unlikely that anyone will argue with such a bold statement. Especially after a busy day at work, or a day full of worries, caring for your child.

Now the time has come for you to buy a crib for your dear and long-awaited child. Do you do this a few days before the baby is born together, or are mother and baby already in the hospital, and the new dad is rushing around the shops looking for exactly what he needs? There are different options, but you still have to buy a crib. Which is the best crib to choose?

A beautiful crib does not mean it is good

Most often, young parents choose a crib based on its appearance, so to speak, cute and beautiful, but in addition to beauty, it must be durable, stable and safe.

A crib for a small child is not only a place to sleep, it is also a place to play. In the first months, the baby does not know how to do anything, he just sleeps quietly and calmly in the crib. But after 6 months, you will simply be surprised at the activity of your baby and what he will do there. In order for the crib to withstand all this cheerful activity, it must be of high quality. Let's try to figure out how to choose a crib?

What material should a baby crib be made of?

It is better to look for a high-quality crib among those made of natural wood. You should not forget that now a lot of furniture is made to look like wood, so if it is difficult for you to determine what this or that model is made of, ask the seller to show a hygiene certificate.

They usually do this without much desire, but if it’s really important to you where your child will sleep, insist on your right (after all, there are a lot of children’s stores, and this is where the world “doesn’t come together”).

When choosing a crib, pay attention to the type of wood. The most inexpensive furniture is made from pine, but it is also the most fragile, since the wood is soft. A crib made of pine will have scratches and marks from the child’s teeth, and the fastenings of such a crib are weaker. Furniture made from birch is already stronger, and the strongest and most durable crib is, of course, made from beech. There will be virtually no damage to such furniture and it will last longer.

Arranging a place for a child to sleep must be approached very responsibly. Let's consider the main points that are worth considering when choosing a crib for a child:

  • the distance between the rods should be no more than 6 centimeters so that the baby does not accidentally get stuck between them;
  • the bottom of the crib should be slatted so that the mattress is well ventilated;
  • very convenient if the crib moves easily, choose a crib with wheels, it will be convenient for you to move it to another room or move it aside to wash the floor. After all, the issue of cleanliness is very important for the place where the baby lives;
  • In a good crib, you can adjust the height of the bottom. When the child grows up and learns to sit and later stand up, you can lower the bottom: your “nimble little one” will need a deeper crib;
  • It is more convenient to lay down and lift the child if the sides are lowered. Pay attention to this when deciding which crib to choose
    ;
  • Drawers can come in handy. You can store children's clothes, laundry or a wealth of baby toys in them. The only thing is to choose a drawer that is higher above the floor, so that it is convenient to wash under the bed;
  • the canopy over the crib is a very beautiful thing when the child is a newborn, but when the baby grows up, it is better to remove it, otherwise the “shilopopik” will overturn this bulky structure.

A rocking chair, a pendulum, or maybe a transformer?

How to choose a children's bed from such a large selection that makes your eyes wide open in children's stores? You only need one, but which one?

A rocking bed or a pendulum will really help you out when you put your baby to bed; children fall asleep well while rocking. The only difference between these cribs is that you will rock the rocking chair yourself, while the pendulum will rock the child for quite a long time without your participation.

A very comfortable transformable bed, when the baby grows up, it can be converted into a bed for a preschooler.

Dear moms and dads, before purchasing a crib for your baby, review more than one option, consider all the pros and cons of the models you like. You shouldn't buy a crib that's too fashionable, but you shouldn't skimp either. Good luck in choosing a crib for your baby.

Beech

Density 660 kg/m3.

Beech is the second most common and valuable genus of the beech family after oak. These are deciduous trees, slender, columnar, 45-50 m high, with a trunk diameter of up to 2 m. Beeches grow up to 350 years, most intensively at the age of 40-100 years. Life expectancy is over 500 years.

Beech wood is white with a yellowish or reddish tint. The annual layers are clearly visible. Old trees sometimes have red-brown colored mature wood. This does not affect the quality; on the contrary, such trees are especially valued by cabinetmakers, but they are quite rare. The color range of beech wood is quite diverse - from pink to white. To remove this variety of colors and give the wood a more uniform shade, as well as make it more stable, beech requires preliminary steaming. If this is not done, the texture of the wood will be very variegated. This procedure takes about three days.

Beech has perhaps the highest bending ability, which was widely used in the production of bent furniture. The wood is well processed, perfectly finished, and accepts various paints and varnishes.

Due to its high wear resistance, beech is widely used for the manufacture of wooden stairs. The pleasant warm shade is the reason that it is often used for separate small items.

The light pinkish tint of beech evokes a feeling of warmth. The simple and noble structure of this coating is the perfect finishing touch to any interior.

Oak and ash from the point of view of materials science

Oak and ash are among the most valuable tree species. Let us list in more detail the technical characteristics of oak and ash, and also consider the areas of their use.

The first most important physical property of wood is moisture content. A cubic meter of freshly cut oak weighs 1.04 tons, and in an air-dry state (with a humidity of 10-12%) - 0.76 tons. The moisture content of wood used in carpentry should not exceed 12%. It is important that oak, like ash, is very demanding in terms of drying conditions. Rapid drying can lead to cracking of oak and ash wood. whether oak, ash or brick is thermal, sound and electrical conductivity. Dense tree species such as beech, oak or ash have a higher thermal conductivity than less dense pine or birch. Therefore, oak and ash are used mainly in flooring and interior decoration, and not in the construction of walls. The sound conductivity of wood is much higher than that of other materials, so additional sound insulation of oak or ash partitions is necessary. The electrical conductivity of wood depends on its humidity and can change during operation depending on changes in air humidity in the room. Highly hygroscopic wood (such as beech) easily absorbs moisture from the air, as a result of which its size, shape and electrical conductivity can change. To reduce hygroscopicity, wooden products are coated with protective paints, varnishes, etc. It should be noted that oak, like ash, are dense tree species, and their electrical conductivity does not change significantly with changes in room humidity. Let us point out the mechanical properties of oak and ash. 700 g/m3 and 680 g/m3 are the densities of oak and ash, respectively. The slight difference in density explains the similar mechanical properties of oak and ash. The wood of these trees is very hard and durable. According to the Brinnell method, the hardness of oak is 3.7, ash is 4. Floors made of oak or ash are distinguished by high wear resistance and resistance to mechanical stress. In addition, oak and ash wood has a high viscosity value, which determines the flexibility of these materials. Without boring the consumer with numbers, let’s say that resistance to various loads, such as compression and tension, is very high for both oak and ash. Dense oak and ash wood has a high ability to hold nails and screws, which is especially important for long-term use. Despite their resistance to fungal attack, we recommend that products made from oak, ash and other deciduous trees be coated with special protective agents before use.
