We sew cool pillows: step-by-step master classes. Do-it-yourself bolster pillow is an indispensable attribute of comfort and coziness Patterns for sofa bolster cushions

An orthopedic cushion pillow for the cervical spine is very popular among those who care about their health. Today, this product is widely used to correct the spine, neck and lumbar areas, and once upon a time a pillow in the shape of a cushion was a decoration for the home.

Until the 20th century, a large number of headrests in the interior was perceived as a sign of prosperity and wealth of the owners of the house. The Arab sultans, as well as the ancient Greeks, loved to sit with their elbows on a bolster pillow. The products had a variety of shapes and sizes. They were also used by Europeans who love a comfortable pastime. There were bolster pillows on the sofa, armchairs, ottomans, in a word, they were laid out everywhere. Today, such products are successfully used to treat problems with the neck, spine, and lower back and give excellent results.

Pros of use

If you begin to notice that headaches, as well as aching sensations in the neck are getting worse, or you are suffering from insomnia, then you should consult a specialist. It is best not to wait for such problems and take care of your health before illnesses occur. To do this, just reconsider your sleeping position and change your regular headrest to an orthopedic one. Many have already gotten used to curvy products, but not all of them guarantee a healthy posture while relaxing.

Some patterns force our neck and spine into incorrect positions. When a person lies on a large, lush pillow, the upper spine experiences serious strain. It must also be said that when the spine area is stretched forward, the chin area is greatly lowered. It is after such poses that a person encounters aching pain and a broken state. Over time, a serious migraine can develop, which greatly disrupts the usual rhythm of life. In the worst case, a person develops osteochondrosis. In such conditions, one can only dream of a calm and sound sleep.

If you do not want to experience the problems listed above, then you need to get orthopedic head restraints. They are made in the form of a roller, which guarantees the correct position of your body during moments of rest. Such products keep the spine in a straight position and the head does not sag. In this position, the neck receives proper support, and will certainly thank you for this with good health and lack of tension in the muscles. You will be able to avoid spinal deformation, which gradually increases when using classic products.

The roller can be used not only for the neck, but also for the lower back. So, you will significantly improve not only the upper, but also the lower back and lumbar region.

Master class on making

As we can see, the most common are 2 large groups of such pillows: classic, intended primarily for sleeping, as well as decorative ones for the sofa, which can be quite large or long, or small. If you are interested in how to sew a bolster pillow with your own hands, want to know how the pattern is made, and also find out for yourself many other interesting points, we recommend studying a short master class that describes how to make this product yourself at home.

There are several options for how to make a bolster pillow with your own hands. They are all somewhat different from each other, but at the initial stage you will need to prepare approximately the same materials and tools. Here is their list:

What do you needWhat is it used for?
AccessoriesButtons or zipper for closing the filling or for the cover
Sewing kitNeedles, scissors, etc., with which you will sew
TextileUseful for filling and for covers, as well as pillowcases (you can use a ready-made one)
FillerBuckwheat, foam rubber, holofiber and so on, depending on what degree of rigidity and durability you want to get in the end
CompassNeeded when sewing a pillow in the form of a cylinder
Various decorative accessoriesIn case you want to further decorate the case

We will not describe separately the process of sewing pillows of different shapes (round, cylindrical, classic rectangular, square, and so on), since the process itself, in essence, is no different. The only difference is in the shape of the pattern.

Remember! Foam pillows are softer, but at the same time much less “healthy” in terms of comfort and usefulness for the neck and lower back.

In fact, if we are talking about a pillow with orthopedic properties, it is advisable to choose a more or less rigid material for the filler, with which you could make a pillow with the so-called memory effect. This means that such a product will take the shape of your neck, head or lower back and remain in this position for a long time, as if remembering the outlines of your body. Foam rubber in this regard is not the optimal filler, although it is quite cheap.

So, in short, the sequence of actions when sewing a pillow with your own hands is as follows:

  • After preparing the materials and tools mentioned above, you need to make a pattern for the mound. Filling, if anyone doesn’t know, is the same fabric “bag”, which is then filled with artificial or natural filler.
  • Then you need to cut out the blanks and sew them using a sewing machine or an ordinary needle. The second, of course, takes longer, but the seam is quite durable.
  • If the filler is bulk, then you can sew in a zipper, which, by the way, is a very convenient thing. If we explain it using buckwheat husks as an example, we can say that if such a pillow uses a zipper, you can periodically (once a year or six months) unzip the zipper, pour out the filling, dry it, and then refill it. When such a filler is completely “wear and tear” (remember that it absorbs hair oil, sweat, and, as some experts believe, negative energy), you can simply shake it out, fill in a new one and continue to use the updated pillow.
  • Be that as it may, let’s mix the filler inside the filling. Sew it tightly or use a zipper, as discussed in the previous paragraph. As numerous reviews indicate, it is better, after all, to use a combination with zipper and bulk filler.
  • Let's make a cover. In terms of its manufacturing technology, its production is no different from sewing filling. To make it easier, you can use ready-made patterns for making covers.
  • Actually, the pillow is ready. All you have to do is put on a pillowcase, if provided, or, if you wish, decorate the cover. To do this, you can make decorative crochet weaving, do embroidery, sew on figured patches (patchwork technique), and so on.

As promised, I’m returning to the “pillow” topic with master classes that I prepared for a special issue of the magazine “I cross-stitch. My house". There are a great many ways to sew a pillow, I tried to highlight the six simplest, in my opinion, solutions. You are already familiar with two of them (a pillow with buttons and a pillow with ties), so I will only show four here. A lot of people have asked me about sewing in a zipper, so let's start with a pillow with a zipper.

Zipper pillow

There are several options for sewing in a zipper, we will look at one of them. The zipper is sewn onto the back of the pillow.

Cutting Features:

For the backdrop, cut out two pieces, the width of which is equal to the part for the front side of the pillow, and the total height is equal to the height of the part for the front side of the pillow plus about 2 cm.

Place the backdrop pieces with right sides facing each other and pin together. Place marks, noting the location of the lightning. Stitch the parts as follows: sew to the first mark with a regular stitch, tack, change the stitch length to maximum (5mm) and stitch to the second mark, change the stitch length to normal and, having completed the tack, sew further with a regular stitch. The resulting stitch should look like this: regular stitch - bartack - basting stitch - bartack - regular stitch:

Press seam allowance. On the wrong side, place a zipper along the seam, pin and baste (by machine or by hand):

Remove the pins. Sew a zipper on the front side using a special sewing machine foot designed for sewing in zippers:

Open the basting line. Fold the backdrop with the right side of the pillowcase, right sides facing each other, pin along the perimeter and stitch from the wrong side. Cut the corners diagonally and overcast the seam allowances with a zig-zag seam.

Pillowcase with a “pocket” - ideal for beginners

This is the simplest pillowcase; it is sewn very simply and quickly from a single piece of fabric with a minimum number of seams.

Cutting Features:

Cut out a rectangle, the width of which is equal to the width of the pillow plus two centimeters for seam allowances (1cm on each side), and the length is equal to twice the height of the pillow plus about 15cm for the inner flap (“pocket”) plus about 6cm for hems of two sections (3cm each). for each cut).

Hem both short edges. To do this, turn the fabric on the wrong side at a distance of 1 cm. Iron. Fold again by 2cm, iron and stitch:

Place the rectangle right side up. On the left side, fold the fabric up at a distance equal to the height of the pillow. Then, on the right side, fold up the remaining fabric equal to the size of the “pocket”. Pin the pieces together along the side edges:

Sew the pillowcase on both sides. Cut the corners diagonally and overcast the seam allowances with a zig-zag seam:

Round pillow - ideal for beginners

A very simple pillow, fastened with a cord, sewn according to the “yo-yo” principle.

Cutting Features:

Cut out a circle with a diameter approximately twice as large as the future pillow and along an oblique (i.e. at an angle of 45 degrees to the grain thread) a strip of fabric 5-7 cm wide, with a length equal to the circumference of the round part.

Stitch the strip into a ring and pin along the entire length of the circumference, right side to right side. Sew in a circle, trim the seam allowance with zig-zag scissors:

Fold the untreated edge of the strip to the wrong side at a distance of about 1 cm and iron it. Fold the strip in half and stitch to the wrong side of the circle, leaving a small hole for threading the cord:

Insert a lace or ribbon into the drawstring, tighten it and tie it with a bow.

Pillow - bolster

A cushion cushion can be made very simply by sewing a long “tube” and tying both ends with ribbons, like a candy. A more complex option is a roller with a zipper and round bases, the sewing of which requires some skill.

Cutting Features:

Sew a zipper into the main piece as shown above for the zipper cushion. On both sides, pin the base (round parts) to the resulting cylinder, folding the parts right sides and making sure the fabric is evenly distributed:

Sew in circles. Trim the seam allowances with zig-zag scissors close to the stitching so that in the future the seams will lie well and not puff up:

Perhaps we all need to learn the Japanese's instructions for great sleep. They sleep on their backs, on a hard specialized mattress, and place a log in a pillowcase under their heads. According to their point of view, only this position of the body during sleep gives relaxation and complete rest to the whole body. Our mentality is completely different from the Eastern vision of the world, but no one bothers to adopt a little of their rest options: you can sleep on a more hard bed, and instead of a whole beam, you can use a bolster pillow.

It has long been proven that napping on very large and large pillows is harmful. Rollers, on the contrary, are one hundred percent suitable for this purpose. They are low, quite rigid and are placed under the neck, therefore allowing the spine to remain in an even position.

What types of bolster pillows can there be?

Before we start listing all the advantages of such pillows, let’s see what types of bolsters are available:

a bolster pillow for the bed, which is used both for sleeping and for decoration;

sofa decorative cushions for the back;

Decorative rollers can be used for an armrest and also for a footrest.

In size, a decorative cushion-cushion can be straight, accurately repeating the shape of a cylinder, or it can have a gathered edge; in this version of the assembly, it is crowned with either a beautiful button, or a “tail” made of fabric, or a decorative brush, as in the version with a roller made style - East. By the way, bolster pillows actually came to us from the East, which is why made from “oriental” fabrics, for example, multi-color taffeta and decorated with tassels, such pillows look simply beautiful and are considered an invariable accessory of oriental interiors.

Now, by the way, let’s move on to describing the advantages of bolster pillows. Why are they so pleasant that they are not at all inferior to classic rectangular pillows, and sometimes even exceed them?

Pros of bolster pillows

First, let us remember the structure of the human body and the fact that a person receives simple rest only when his spine is relaxed. What does this require? It’s absolutely not enough: so that at the time of sleep both the neck and the head lie on the pillow.

Only when the back is fixed at one point and the deflections are removed does the spine give itself the opportunity to rest. Therefore, the back and neck relax, nervous tension goes away and pain in the spine and back is relieved. Those who suffer from back pain need to completely reconsider their attitude towards sleep, look at what pillows you sleep on, are they comfortable, are they high or, on the contrary, are they low?

The bolster pillow for sleeping has a number of therapeutic effects. A lot depends on the correct position of the body during sleep. For example, as we said above, headaches and pain in the spine go away, blood circulation and heart function improve, blood pressure improves, the eyes relax and intraocular pressure decreases.

The bolster pillow is also recommended for sleep by those who sleep restlessly at night and suffer from chronic fatigue.

By the way, such pillows are classified as orthopedic, in particular if they are filled not with feathers and traditional down, but, for example, with hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly buckwheat husk, which, moreover, has a massage effect. And in addition, orthopedic cushions for relaxation and sleep are filled with healing herbs in order to complement the therapeutic results of aromatherapy. The most common aromatic fillers include juniper, lavender, and cedar. Such rollers not only promote sound sleep, but also relieve stress, relax the nervous structure, and relieve insomnia.

Characteristics of making decorative pillows-rollers with your own hands

For needlewomen, it will be interesting that a pillow-cushion is quite easy to make at home. Moreover, it is very easy to sew to such an extent that even a novice seamstress can get involved in making a roller. The cushion style looks beautiful - patchwork, when the decorative pillowcase is made from multi-colored scraps of fabric. Also on the cushion-cushion there will be suitable lace and hand embroidery. Decorative pillowcases are usually made with an unfastening zipper - this is done for the comfort of using a roller, so that if required, the pillowcase can be very easily removed and washed. And such a pillow can be filled with feathers and traditional down, or synthetic materials, for example, foam rubber or holofiber.

DIY decorative pillow cushion

As you can see, the cylindrical shape of the pillow has a very beneficial effect on the general condition of the body. So, if, for example, you are unwell, then buy at least one roller and try it in action. Who knows, perhaps the bolster pillow itself will give you the opportunity to completely rest and taste life without pain in the cervical region and back. Well, decorative varieties of such pillows will be a good solution for decorating your home.

It is difficult to find an absolutely healthy person these days. One regularly has back pain, another has a headache, a third suffers from insomnia, and a fourth has deteriorating vision. Decorate pillowcases with plant prints

An original way to decorate a pillowcase with a floral design is to transfer prints of living fresh grass and leaves onto it.
A product with this design will be unique and one of a kind. It will also warm you up on winter evenings with thoughts of warm summer. To work you will need:

  • natural light fabric;
  • freshly picked plants;
  • hammer;
  • scissors;
  • parchment, preferably siliconized for baking.

Fern, plantain, and clover are perfect for prints. Pick the plant you need, spread it on the fabric and cover with parchment. Beat it very hard with a hammer so that the juice comes out of the leaves, which is absorbed into the fabric and forms an imprint. Remember
: you need to pick off plants on a hard, flat surface.

Experiment with different leaves, stems, and placement to get the look you want.

How to use: operating tips

Orthopedic cushion cushion for the cervical spine

If you purchase a neck cushion for osteochondrosis, it is extremely important to monitor the effectiveness of the product. To do this, pay attention to the following points:

  • If you notice increased pain and discomfort while using it, you should stop lying on it. You can try it again, but after some time.
  • More than one headrest can be used for the lumbar region. It happens that one thing is not enough to relieve pain and tension in this area;
  • If you use a roller and notice that your legs are swollen in the morning, you should consult a specialist.
  • If you often sleep or rest on your side, it's worth purchasing an additional headrest. It must be squeezed between the legs so that blood circulation in this area does not deteriorate at night.

If you doubt that you are placing the product correctly, you should consult a specialist. This will allow you to choose the safest and healthiest position possible.

Do-it-yourself bolster pillow: sew a version with sides

A more complex pattern for a cylindrical sleep accessory involves cutting two additional elements. In addition to the large rectangle, cut out two circles of suitable size. These will be the side parts. Sew the pillow according to the previous instructions. First, connect the long sides of the rectangle to each other, and then sew the circles into the holes on the sides. Such a cushion cushion can be made of fabric that replicates other textiles in the room, such as curtains or a bedspread. An original decorative option is to sew the long part of the accessory from several separate strips of different fabrics. You can also additionally decorate the product with braid or some bright elements.

Neck cushion for osteochondrosis

The popularity of rollers for osteochondrosis is due to the fact that they not only prevent illnesses, but also perfectly treat symptoms. It's no secret that at night a person takes many incorrect positions and numbness of the hands at night is just the tip of the iceberg. Osteochondrosis can be a much more disastrous outcome. Fighting this disease is much more difficult than taking measures to prevent it.

Orthopedic bolsters and pillows for sleeping with osteochondrosis will help you rest fully; they relax the neck muscles at night. Thanks to this, you wake up rested, without aching or nagging pain, and full of vigor and energy.

We can highlight the key positive results that come from using a bolster for sleep and rest, including:

  • significant reduction in nagging and aching pain;
  • increased blood circulation. This means that during sleep your spine will receive the necessary nutrition and will not be curved;
  • improving metabolism;
  • complete relaxation of those areas and muscles that suffer and strain the most when resting on a lush pillow;
  • normalization of psycho-emotional mood;
  • eliminating the feeling of weakness after sleep.

Experts strongly recommend continuing use even after the symptoms and discomfort in the neck muscles disappear. In general, you need to make it a rule to take care of your health and develop the right posture for relaxation. This way, you can always feel a surge of energy and forget about problems with relaxation. Your sleep will become sound, the way it should be normally for a healthy person.

The home interior consists of many details that create a cozy warmth in the house. One of these interior items is a decorative cushion in the form of a cushion. Such pillows, along with poufs and carpets, came to us from Eastern culture. There they played the role of armrests on couches and wooden sofas. The fillings for them were horsehair, straw or dry fern leaves.

But down and feathers were not used to fill such rollers, because... the armrests had to be elastic enough to maintain their shape and not sag under the weight of the body.

Nowadays, sofa armrests have turned into a fashionable accessory - a sofa cushion on which you can lie down or lean while watching TV or reading a book.

If you like handmade items, then you can easily sew such a cushion pillow with your own hands, using the remains of various scraps of dense fabric. The dimensions of the pillow can be absolutely any; they are determined based on your preferences or the size of the sofa. The ends of the pillow can be decorated with textile flowers, decorative tassels, pleating, bows, ribbons, ruffles, applique or decorative embroidery.

The covers for such pillows often have convenient fasteners with Velcro, buttons or zippers. Then it is very convenient to remove them and wash them when they get dirty. Sintepon, cotton wool, holofiber, foam rubber and other modern materials are used as filler. You can also use ready-made pillow inserts. They can be easily purchased at textile stores, where there are liners of different sizes. All that remains is to sew the cover of the desired size, put the insert inside and the pillow is ready.

Even a novice needlewoman can sew such a stylish piece of furniture from any leftover fabric. Today we’ll look at how to sew a bolster pillow with your own hands using a simple pattern.

Types of rollers

Cushion cushions can be completely different; to understand which one you want to make for yourself, you should familiarize yourself with their varieties.

There are bolsters that can be used on the bed specifically for relaxation and sleep. They can be placed under the neck, under the head, under the arms, legs, and in general under any part of the body; they are almost universal in their purpose.

These pillows have a great look, they will suit any interior, and depending on the chosen appearance, any style.

But besides pillows intended for the body, there are pillows simply for decoration. They can simply decorate your sofa in the living room or serve as a bumper on the bed in the children's room.

Buckwheat husk is considered the best filler for a roller. This is an environmentally friendly product, and it is in Japan that this filler is most popular. If you notice, store-bought orthopedic pillows are also filled with processed buckwheat. Using such a pillow will ensure a slight deformation of the shape when placed under parts of the body, but not loss of it, and thereby increase comfort.
