In recent years, wenge color has been particularly popular in the design of interior doors. This shade has gained such popularity thanks to its noble color, which fits perfectly into almost any interior.
The role of parquet in the interior of an apartment
The main advantage of parquet over other types of flooring is, of course, its aesthetic appeal. Natural wood of any shade and texture looks prestigious in any case.
The dies themselves can have different sizes and even shapes. Most often, rectangular ones are used in residential premises. Triangular ones are also a fairly common option. Artistic parquet in the interior is the most beautiful option. Such a coating can consist of dies of various shapes.
Artistic parquet tiles can have a variety of shapes
Important: To finish the floor in small rooms, you should use a covering made from small tiles. In a spacious room, you can lay a version of parquet with medium and large blocks.
Based on the interior design features. So, for a rich, classic look, mahogany, oak, walnut, cherry or some other exotic or noble species are a good choice. For a simpler interior, you can choose pine, alder, birch, etc.
Parquet can become a real decoration for any interior, including a room in a modern style.
Gray parquet in a minimalist style interior
Using a parquet floor in gray tones is advantageous for several reasons. Firstly, light shades visually enlarge the room. Secondly, they have a calming effect on the nervous system. Tired of the flickering of bright colors, the gaze rests on them. And finally, the undoubted advantage is that gray parquet can become the basis of an organic, holistic design not only in traditional and country style, but also in modern urban style. It goes well with cool tones in the wall decoration and balances them, giving the room an atmosphere of lightness and coolness. At the same time, the predominance of gray shades in the interior with correctly placed bright accents well emphasizes its laconicism and completeness. Gray oak parquet will give you the opportunity to experiment with the decoration of walls and windows without losing the overall style. You can combine it with black or colored wallpaper, curtains or blinds without fear of disturbing the harmony of the decor. In addition, the use of gray parquet will help to focus attention on the decorative details, which create the uniqueness of any interior.
For high-quality repairs, not only the decoration of living rooms is important.
Selecting the color of the dies
Perhaps the most important criterion for choosing parquet, be it a modular or piece version, is, of course, its color.
Bleached coating
For small and medium-sized rooms, it is best to choose light parquet. The design of the apartment will greatly benefit from this. The fact is that such shades allow you to make the room visually somewhat more spacious. In addition, light shades should be used if you want to make the interior light, modern and versatile.
The light coating makes the interior light and versatile
Note: The only exceptions may be bleached oak and some varieties of exotic woods with light wood.
Light and white parquet (not only bleached oak, but also maple, bleached beech, ash, hornbeam, birch, larch, alder, etc.) firstly, visually expands the boundaries of the room, and secondly, it brings a touch of exclusivity to the interior . This type of coating can have different shades. For well-lit, sunny rooms, professional designers advise choosing light gray parquet in a cool shade. For rooms located on the north side, a warm, slightly beige shade is more suitable.
In rooms with windows facing north, it is worth laying a light covering of a warm shade
This same option, as well as a sand-colored coating, looks better in expensive, rich classic interiors. Cool shades and “worn” look are more suitable for rooms decorated in a vintage style. To decorate the floors of modern interiors, a slightly “blue” version is usually used.
In a well-lit room, it would be best to use a gray, slightly “purple” or “blue” option
Important: White oak parquet will look beautiful in an apartment only in combination with light-colored furniture. Sometimes in such interiors the method of contrasts is used. That is, some elements have, on the contrary, a very dark color.
If you want to finish the floors with bleached oak parquet, special attention should be paid to lighting. Do not use lamps that produce too warm yellow light. In such lighting, the white surface of the floor will most likely appear unpleasantly yellowish. This does not apply only to bleached oak of a grayish tint.
When using a light yellowish tint indoors, the lighting must be selected correctly
Advice: Do not cover parquet with light varnish. This option will most likely look like linoleum or laminate. It is better to treat the surface with wax. Matte light parquet looks much richer than glossy.
Parquet in dark shades
The dark color of parquet is an option that is well suited only for large areas. For example, ebony parquet, highly polished rosewood, dark merbau, stained oak, etc. can also become a real decoration of any interior. Wenge parquet looks very beautiful and presentable in solid rooms. The texture of this wood has a rich red-brown hue with active gold inclusions.

When using dark floor finishes in room design, the method of contrasts is usually used. To prevent the room from looking too gloomy, you can, for example, lay a light carpet on the floor or place light-colored furniture in the apartment. Very often, colors such as cream, wheat, sand, white and soft vanilla are combined with dark parquet. The texture of dark parquet is often emphasized by varnishing.
A light-colored carpet will look best on a dark surface.
Tip: Do not use black parquet to decorate your living space. Otherwise, the interior will look too gloomy. Chocolate or dark brown finishes look much better in apartments.
Other parquet colors
Both dark and light floor finishes, as well as beautiful parquet flooring in other shades, look very impressive in residential areas.
For example, a rich pinkish version of this floor finish (cherry, pear) can look quite aesthetically pleasing. It will fit very well into a modern design room.
A warm, cozy atmosphere can be achieved by using yellowish and red parquet (olive, boxwood, teak). The same effect, but with a touch of solidity, is created by brown parquet: walnut, sucupira, lapacho. The red version of the floor finish - mahogany, padauk, balsa wood - looks very presentable and quite original in the interior of a living space. Gray parquet in the interior is used if you need to give the apartment a modern, stylish look.
Colored mahogany parquet is one of the most beautiful types of floor finishes
An apartment can be decorated with parquet of absolutely any shade. Even not too expensive options can make the room cozy and at the same time presentable. The main thing is to correctly combine this type of flooring with furniture and other furnishings, and also take into account the size of the room.
In the Soviet years, the floor design in a standard Khrushchev building was not distinguished by the splendor of colors, ornaments and textures. A massive board painted with floor paint or grayish linoleum was, perhaps, all that the average citizen of the USSR could decorate his home with at that time. Well, could it have occurred to him that after several decades, he would rack his brains over what to choose: laminate or parquet boards, carpet or porcelain tiles, cork or tiles? Of course not! In a country where everyone lived the same way, where every apartment had a Finnish wall, and a small ribbed rug lay on the floor, there simply could not be excesses. But this is exactly what happened and now you have to make a choice and think about which material will look better in the hallway and which one should be laid in the living room.
Apartment floor design. More creativity - more positive
Gray parquet
The color of the flooring plays a decisive role in creating the interior, which ultimately affects the entire style of the room, as well as the emotional mood of people. Rooms in which gray parquet is used to create the interior look quite elegant.
The gray color of the floor does not pose any difficulty for further selection of furniture; it can be either dark or white. It is better to use gray floors when decorating the interiors of those rooms that face the sunny side or add more warm tones to the decoration.
Various shades of gray parquet in the interior
Gray parquet in the interior of an apartment or private country house is perceived quite critically by many people, but those people who love originality and try to avoid traditional, but already boring solutions, willingly use this color of flooring in decorating the interior of their home. Gray and beige parquet colors are considered fashionable and very stylish today; they are popular among lovers of discreet, aristocratic interior design. Modern manufacturers produce gray parquet in different shades, so it is not difficult to choose the one that best suits your requirements and preferences.
Gray parquet will not be as strict as its dark counterpart, nor will it be as simple - like white, it will add nobility and grace to the room, thanks to its versatility.
Dark gray parquet visually somewhat reduces the area of the room, so it is advisable to use it in large areas. Wallpaper with bright patterns or flowers goes well with this floor, enlivening the interior with its rich shades, and dark gray flooring requires sufficient natural or artificial lighting so that the room does not look dull and gloomy.
The light gray color of parquet, on the contrary, adds volume, creates an atmosphere of lightness, freshness and coolness, creating a calming effect of relaxation. Light gray floors are most relevant in rooms such as the bedroom, dining room, living room, and children's room, but they are not very suitable for an office where you need to focus on work issues. Light-colored floors should be used in small rooms; they will visually expand the space.
Gray parquet can make a room “cold” and lifeless if you choose the wrong wallpaper and furniture, so you should add accessories and objects in warm or bright colors to such an interior: orange, purple, blue.
Gray parquet in the interior is a rather complex and bold version of flooring, but at the same time the room will look modern and distinguished by its individuality.
Gray parquet is perfect for rooms designed in any modern style, for example, high-tech, loft, urban minimalism. In these cases, the gray shade of the floor is associated with a metallic sheen, used both in furniture decoration and in modern household appliances and accessories, and looks harmonious with glass and glossy surfaces.
Gray parquet floors easily fit into a stylized interior, decorated in retro, vintage or rustic country style; they serve as an excellent background for stone, brickwork, stucco, and emphasize the originality of furniture, especially “aged” ones.
Linoleum in the interior of the apartment
Linoleum is gradually losing ground, retreating further into the depths of centuries. However, manufacturers are trying with all their might to fight for the right of PVC coating to take its rightful place in the homes and apartments of Russians. A million shades and patterns, textures and textures have already been invented, but no one even thinks of giving up. Every day new variants of patterns appear on store shelves, so much so that all doubts instantly recede away.
Floor design option using PVC coating
Floor design option using natural linoleum
Both options are good because they emphasize the fidelity of the direction chosen by the designer in the stylistic design of the apartment. In the first photo, linoleum convincingly proves that eco-style can also be maintained with the help of artificial turf. The second photo shows the owner of the apartment’s clear commitment to minimalism - this can be seen not only by the amount of furniture in the room, but also by the number of colors used in the interior.
Marmoleum - an opportunity to express yourself
Marmoleum is a fundamentally new type of flooring that allows you to create a bright and individual image of an apartment or house. This material comes in a variety of colors and patterns. It's easy to create with him.

Light floors and light doors in the interior: features of the combination and interesting ideas
November 22, 2016
To create a harmonious and attractive interior, it is not enough to simply purchase newfangled finishing materials and exquisite furniture. Even the most expensive renovation will look unfinished if you do not pay special attention to the combination of shades and textures of all materials and interior items. Today we will talk about how to choose the right flooring and interior doors, as these are the main components of any design project.
Recently, experts are increasingly recommending laying light-colored flooring, as it suits almost any design style, visually enlarges the space, and gives the room lightness and freshness. But how to choose doors, furniture and various interior items for it?
To answer this question, we will look at how light floors and light doors are combined, what features this design has, and also determine in which cases dark door leaves can be used with light shades of the floor.
Design “light floor, light doors” - what is its popularity based on
Many will say that a single color scheme will certainly lead to an ordinary and boring result, but as practice shows, this is not at all the case. One has only to add bright notes to the interior (using various decors, carpets, pillows, etc.), and it will amaze you with its originality. To see this, just look at some examples of room design in the Baroque, Provence, Country, Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Vintage styles.
Light floors and light doors look very advantageous in cases where their shades differ by a couple of tones, and the main furniture is matched to the color of the door leaf.
The advantages of light-colored floors include the fact that with the help of lighting fixtures their shade can change slightly. Therefore, if you correctly position the lighting points, the interior can sparkle in completely different colors.
Also in favor of light floors and doors are the possibilities of visual expansion of space, the versatility of these colors, the variety of shades and the spectacular appearance of the room.
General rules for choosing a door design
The main criterion for choosing interior doors is their appearance.
The style of the door, the way it is finished, the shade and the door handles should fit well and be in harmony with the surrounding environment. Well-chosen colors, shapes and textures will help give the interior a special character.
When choosing doors, you should pay attention not only to the color of the flooring, but also to the way the room itself is decorated. Since every room has a different style, the door you choose should match it.
What color should the door be?
As for the color combination of the floor and the door leaf, there is only one rule - the door and the material for finishing the floor should not be the same tone. Preference should be given to different shades of the same color and similar tones, since the absolute similarity of two interior elements will certainly lead to monotony.
The color of the interior door can be similar to the shade of the floor covering or be its complete opposite. An option that uses dark doors and a light floor is used in cases where it is necessary to create a contrast that gives the room a special character.
Below we will consider the features of each design method.
Light floors and light doors: design features
This design will appeal to lovers of classicism and elegance. Such interiors look quite harmonious, and most importantly, they do not limit the owners in the choice of various decorative elements.
The light design of doors and floors can be done in the following colors:
If you can’t decide what shade to choose for light doors, what flooring is best for them and are afraid of making mistakes in choosing a color, opt for a neutral design. It is considered the most versatile and goes well with various methods of finishing the ceiling and walls.
The neutral palette includes the colors of honey birch, light oak, light alder, ash and acacia.
When choosing yellow-red shades, you should keep in mind that they are completely incompatible with cold blue tones, blue, pink, purple and lilac. In this case, it is better to choose orange, brown, terracotta and slightly green colors.
When using cool shades (gray, milky and light cream colors), you should purchase decor and furniture in subdued colors.
If the room has white window frames and most of the decor is in the same color, the front door is decorated exclusively in white. The flooring is selected in light (but warm) shades.
Light floor and dark doors
As mentioned earlier, dark doors and light floors are combined to create contrast. This design gives the space notes of masculinity, rigor and insight. Typically, this technique is used by designers in large rooms to make their interior warmer and more comfortable.
When using light floors and dark doors in the interior, you should very carefully select the color of furniture and decor. In this case, the use of extravagant, bright and rich colors is unacceptable. It is better to show restraint in choosing shades, otherwise the situation may turn out to be disharmonious and irritating.
Dark doors must be complemented by objects of a similar shade, most often baseboards.
Choosing skirting boards for light floors
For a light floor covering, it is not at all necessary to purchase a light baseboard. Moreover, in cases where the doors are made in dark colors, they try to get the baseboards to be of a similar shade (even if the floor is white).
This method of decoration gives the room additional elegance, but it can only be used in spacious rooms.
If the room is small and low, to visually expand the space you should use a light floor, light baseboard, and doors of similar shades. In this case, you can use both wide and narrow plinths. It can have embossed decorations or be simply smooth.
How to choose the right furniture for a light floor
Now let's look at what objects and furniture best combine light floors and light doors in the interior of the premises.
On a white floor covering, it is recommended to place modern furniture in pastel colors, complemented by accessories of regular shapes and subdued colors. When arranging a room, you need to remember that the light background of the room strongly emphasizes all the colors inside the room. For this reason, experts recommend abandoning colorful patterns and bright decors, since against their background the light floor covering will “get lost” and become faded.
If you want to create a contrast on dark furniture, then opt for elegant and light products that do not clutter up the space, but only add sophistication to it.
Useful tips for decorating a room with light floors
Those who cannot imagine their life without bright colors should not despair. Light flooring can be successfully combined with some rich tones, so let's look at which colors can not overshadow, but highlight light floors and light doors. Design advice says the following:
1. In rooms with white flooring, green furniture looks impressive. This combination gives the room coziness, freshness and is considered suitable for arranging rest rooms.
2. Purple furniture installed on a light background creates a feeling of luxury, elegance and adds a touch of extravagance to the interior. This combination of tones is considered progressive and is especially popular.
3. Furniture in crimson and red colors brings reliability, lightness and optimism to the interior. This design is suitable for the living room, kitchen and children's room.
4. In small rooms, it is advisable to install furniture in blue and blue shades, as it gives the space lightness and airiness. It is better to fill classic interiors with yellow shades.
What you need to know when starting to decorate a room
When arranging your own room, you should clearly understand that the shades used in the room can both emphasize an exquisite design and turn a successful idea into real color chaos. To avoid mistakes when decorating a room, you should familiarize yourself with the basic rules for combining flooring and doors:
1. In small and narrow rooms, you should not focus on dark doors, as this will lead to a visual reduction in space, and the door leaf itself will look very bulky. Light floors and light doors are the best solution in this case.
2. If there are several doorways in the room, then the floors and doors are decorated in the same color. Emphasis is placed on various decorative elements, which allows you to divert attention from the presence of a large number of entrances.
3. For arranging the floor and doorways, you should use materials with the same (or as similar as possible) texture. It is strictly not recommended to combine natural parquet flooring and door leaves made of artificial materials.
For wooden floors, you should purchase doors made of natural wood or glass. But if laminate or linoleum is used as a finishing material, then MDF products will be an ideal option.
Conclusion
Creating a room design yourself is a job that requires certain knowledge, abilities and taste. In this process, it is very important to choose the right colors so that they fit perfectly and emphasize the individuality of the design. Don’t forget about the unity of style in which the interior is furnished. Absolutely all objects located inside the room must correspond to it. If all the requirements are met, the result will certainly please you.

Harmonious combination of doors and floors
During renovation work in a country house or apartment, there will definitely be a need to choose a color scheme for the flooring and interior doors. The essence of the main issue lies in the combination of these interior elements. Doors and floors should complement each other. You can give preference to products of the same color and shade, or choose a contrasting solution. Below we will describe in detail different options for combining flooring and interior door blocks.
Floor and doors: one color or one tone?
Many consumers find it difficult to choose the color of doors and flooring. The variety of offers on the market of building materials and products can confuse anyone. In past years, the rule was to choose the same color for the floor and doors. Today there are no such strict requirements for interior design. You can install interior doors in rooms that are darker or lighter than the floor covering. Some generally prefer not only different shades, but also the color of these interior elements.
The only rule that is still relevant and continues to apply is the law of combining floors and doors by shade. For example, if the home has warm-colored flooring, then the interior doors should be made in the same style. Warm shades include reddish, yellow, amber or the color of natural wood. At the same time, if the flooring is made in graphite color, bleached oak color, wenge, blue, purple, mint, then the doors should be chosen in similar cold tones.
Another generally accepted rule for the design of a room is the observance of the so-called trinity of colors in the interior. This means that a maximum of three main colors are allowed in the room. For example, if the owner of an apartment or house chose lilac when choosing a shade for the walls, and the flooring is gray, then there is only one more color available. This is what needs to be used for interior doors. As an option, make them in birch color or go with zebrawood coloring.
Another good solution for the color of the floor and doors would be to lay flooring and install interior doors of the same color, but in different shades. It should be emphasized that almost all people perceive and evaluate the interior in a vertical direction from top to bottom. First attention is paid to the ceiling, then to the doors and only then to the floor. This feature of visual perception allows you to install the door several tones lighter than the floor. If you choose a door that is darker than the floor covering, this will contribute to the appearance of an unpleasant contrast, to justify the presence of which in the interior you will have to use extraordinary imagination.
Is it possible to make floors and doors in different colors?
There is a completely exotic combination of door and floor colors. For example, green interior doors and yellow flooring, gray door leaf and purple flooring. Such combinations may be the result of fashion trends or the imagination of an interior designer. It should be emphasized that door structures and flooring may well be of different colors. But at the same time, it is necessary to wisely select a combination of shades and try to combine these interior elements into a single space.
This effect can be achieved using skirting boards. Previously, the principle in interior design was that the color and shade of this element and the floor covering had to be identical. But today the situation is exactly the opposite. The color of the plinth is selected in accordance with the panels of the door and door leaf. Using this technique, it is possible to achieve a successful combination of doors and floors of different colors.
In addition, doors and floors can be combined using decorative elements. For example, it was decided to make the flooring in dark cherry tones, and the door block was chosen in pink beech color. In order to combine these colors, you can use decorative overlays on the door leaf in a cherry shade. At the same time, there is another way to combine such different colors. So, you can use small floor mats of the same shade as the door leaf. It would be helpful to say that other items are also suitable for combining the colors of the floor and the door. For example, you can use a pink floor vase.
On the other hand, if the plans for creating the interior of a room include the use of furniture made of natural wood, then it is recommended to link the color of the door specifically to the furnishings, and not to the floor covering. The final impression of the interior of the room will be formed along the so-called midline of sight at the level of the walls, furniture and doors. When choosing wooden doors and wood furniture, it is important to take into account not only the specific species, but also the texture of the fibers.
Doors for painting
It should be noted that doors differ from each other not only in the natural color of the wood. This also includes doors that are painted during the production process. This method of decorating a door leaf is becoming increasingly widespread. Previously, only doors in the inexpensive price segment were painted. Today, quite expensive models are also subject to this finishing method. Thick covering paints are used for painting. What to do in this case with the color of the floor and doors?
Many interior designers advise their clients not to try to match doors and flooring, but to focus on the walls. With this solution, the floor should not be too bright, but, on the contrary, should set off the color combination of the walls and door. At the same time, even with this approach, it remains appropriate to adhere to the rule of tonal combinations. That is, “warm” doors should be complemented by a floor of warm colors and vice versa. For example, the door is painted in a rich lilac color. This option will harmoniously combine with yellow walls. But it’s better to choose a gray floor or make it look like bleached oak or ash.
If several doors are used in a room, then some additional nuances should be taken into account when trying to combine doors and floors. So, if there are two doors in a room or one of them is used to enter the dressing room, then it is recommended to paint it the same color as the walls. In this case, the door block will blend in with them and will not be so noticeable in the interior of the room.
It would be helpful to say that choosing doors and floors of the same color is a somewhat risky decision. As a result, the inhabitants of the home may end up with a boring and very annoying interior. As a last resort, you should choose different shades for doors and flooring. An example is the combination of a dark green ceramic tile floor with golden decorative elements with a door that is several tones lighter. In this case, the handles and hinges should be made of yellow metal in accordance with the tone of the scarf panel.
The classic option is white doors. They go perfectly with any interior elements. Such doors are good in combination with floor coverings of different colors and shades. At the same time, one of the best combinations will be the union of white doors with a contrasting black or wenge floor covering. Another attractive option would be to make the floor in white, like birch or bleached oak. In this case, it is better to make the baseboard contrasting, which will avoid mixing colors.
Basic rules for combining floor and door colors
There are a few more key recommendations that are based on many years of experience of the best interior designers. So, when choosing doors and floors of bright colors and shades, it is necessary to take into account some general rules. The main ones include, for example, the advisability of choosing flooring and doors that match each other for small rooms. This will create the illusion of increasing the area of the room; in such a place a person will feel more spacious and free. If you use contrasting colors to decorate the floor and doors, this will create the effect of reducing space and make the door visually more massive.
In long and at the same time narrow rooms, bright or contrasting doors will visually bring the wall closer. If the doorway is located on a narrower wall, you can safely paint the doors in a bright color and shade. This technique will allow you to bring the distant wall closer and make the room more harmonious and cozy. To unify the space, you can choose the same color scheme for the flooring and door.
It should be noted that in large and spacious rooms there is room for the most daring experiments. At the same time, do not forget about the principle of trinity and the need to emphasize the color of the door block. As mentioned above, this can be achieved using skirting boards. It would be useful to say that if there are several doors in a large room at once, they should all be made in the same color.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that when solving the problem of how to correctly select entrance or interior doors to the floor, common sense and good taste should not be ignored. This will help you settle on a truly suitable solution and successfully implement your plans.
In such a situation, it is quite possible to paint them in a contrasting tone to the floor. For example, for the flooring the choice fell on the color of cold northern maple. In this case, the door can be painted with mint or lavender color. In addition, a door made in the shade of French rose will look attractive in combination with a similar light and cold floor. In the last few years, this color has become especially relevant and popular.
How to choose the color of the floor and doors to create an interior in various rooms
The interior of residential premises should create a comfortable stay for people, depending on the purpose: to provide conditions for relaxation, productive work or a pleasant pastime. Elements are selected in accordance with the owner’s specific design style and preferences. But the requirements for harmony, a combination of color schemes for the main components - walls, ceilings, furniture, floors and products that fill interior openings - remain unchanged. The color combination of flooring and door panels plays a key role. In this regard, the question that is relevant for many is: how to choose a door to match the interior?
Color Rules
Creating a harmonious interior is a serious task. It requires a thoughtful approach based on basic knowledge of color compatibility and composition of objects. The right solutions allow you to visually increase or decrease the space of a room, focus attention on certain parts of it, and hide certain shortcomings. The rules of color combinations have long been used by designers. Some of them are given below.
Interior color combination
The surfaces of the main walls, floors, and ceilings represent the main elements of the overall design of the room. The use of light colors to decorate them creates the effect of expanding the volume of the room, making it light and airy. But excessive use of such tones can lead to the effect of a cold, visually pale space. A more interesting option is a combination of dark floors and light walls and ceilings. A slight contrast will add fullness to the room without compromising its volume. When using a combination of light shades of ceiling, floor surfaces and dark walls, the image of a horizontally elongated but low room is obtained. And when the dark design of the wall and floor surfaces is combined with the light colors of the ceiling, a gloomy image of a basement, uncomfortable place to stay is created. The impression is smoothed out by dividing the space with baseboards and door panels that are contrasting in color.
Flooring color
The material and color range of flooring presented in hardware stores today is quite wide. Laminate flooring, parquet boards in a wide range of shades and textures, a variety of linoleum, and tiles are available. The choice of skirting boards and borders, emphasizing the demarcation of finishing lines, is also wide. All you need to do is determine whether your preferences are dark or light colors, and both have the right to exist provided that the interior is used in rooms with different purposes.
Combination of dark floor and light ceiling
Floor coverings in light shades have good light reflection properties, while somewhat increasing the volume of the room, giving a feeling of cleanliness and freshness. A good choice for placement in bedrooms and living rooms.
The use of dark-colored floor coverings with light-colored walls creates the classic effect of a slight contrast in the perception of the surroundings, creating a feeling of peace and stability.
For bathrooms, sanitary facilities, and kitchens, tiles are often used as floor coverings, and linoleum is used for corridors. This makes it possible to realize any fantasies. For example, a kitchen floor can be made from tiles in eye-catching colors, alternate colors can be used, and patterns can be created. Thoughtful use of such opportunities allows you to create a cheerful atmosphere in which you will want to create culinary masterpieces and feed them to loved ones in a friendly atmosphere. Of course, strict floor colors are also not alien to the kitchen. The Provence style looks good with its characteristic natural colors and texture of materials. Modern interiors use laminate in brown to chocolate or almost black shades, successfully imitating boards made of expensive wood. In this case, it is necessary to provide for the installation of furniture suitable for this style.
The role of matching skirting boards and borders in the overall picture of room design solutions cannot be underestimated. Well-chosen, such elements allow you to emphasize the beauty of wall coverings and the fundamental nature of the floor. How to choose a color? Both contrasting color options and ones that continue the pattern of the floor covering can be used. The border between the wall and the ceiling has an important decorative character. It can be wide, narrow, or made in the form of molding. Its color depends on preference and the color of the ceiling (should be a little lighter or darker).
Flooring and furniture
An important component of the style of a room is furniture that is correctly selected in color and harmonious with the floor covering. The rule is that the flooring should be in slight contrast with the color of the furniture (lighter or darker). Practice shows that the most suitable combinations are:
- white floor with shades of gray, looks harmonious with wenge colors or white furniture, the color of the doors is also important;
- contrast of visual effect, where the warm color of the laminate can be combined with cool shades of furniture and other interior elements;
- the dark floor is harmonious with furniture from white to peach color variations of the latter;
- the option of combining black furniture with a laminate color close to this shade is considered modern and quite fashionable;
- Other options for color compositions are possible, but it is important that there are no more than three primary colors, since otherwise attention will not be focused on the main line of the style.
Harmony of floor and furniture
Color of door panels and flooring
Doors play an important role in the interior of an apartment. In this regard, the main questions that often arise among property owners are: how to choose the right doors for the floor and walls; how to choose a harmonious door color; It’s better to choose a door that matches the color of the floor or furniture; what to do if the floor coverings in the apartment are different colors? These kinds of questions arise if the owners plan to carry out work on matching the color of doors and floors themselves. Don’t be afraid to experiment – there are no hard and fast standards, only general rules and personal preferences. It is important to remember that choosing the right color for interior doors and flooring can highlight the advantages of a room and hide its shortcomings.
Dark floors and doors
The predominant compositions are based on two directions: contrasting in relation to each other or made in the same color. When choosing the same color scheme, it is necessary to ensure that the shade of the door leaf is slightly lighter. The formula works: light floors - dark doors. The combination of a dark color of the floor and doors requires delimiting the common space along the perimeter with a skirting board of lighter colors, the opposite solution for the shades of doors and laminate - with a dark-colored skirting board, with the installation of contrasting furniture and additional accessories in the room. The decision to use dark doors in an interior with a dark floor is used in the case of using pastel colors or “gilding” on the walls. In small rooms, light floors and rich contrasting doors are welcome.
Dark floor, light door
One of the most popular solutions when developing room design is considered by many to be light-colored walls, combined with dark flooring, and wenge doors. In addition to the above composition of wenge door panels, others are used in the interior, provided:
- if you purchase a floor covering that is somewhat lighter than the door leaf, otherwise you can end up with a rather gloomy-looking room, which can only be saved by intense lighting;
- using contrast between the door leaf and the floor surface, which require approximately the same surface texture, for example, white oak laminate and wenge door leaf;
Wenge door
- selection of “warm” or “cold” colors for a significant part of the interior elements (door panels, flooring, furniture, walls);
- installing wenge fittings on the door that are in harmony with other stylistic items located in the room;
- building extravagant interiors, a sharp contrast in the color of the surface of the laminate and doors is allowed, but it is important to prevent the shades of the door and wall coverings from matching, only this can lead to the desired result.
Entrance painted door
Another question that owners have: what color should they choose for the entrance doors to their apartment? The entrance door is installed, as a rule, for long periods of time and can “survive” repeated repairs and changes in the style of the entire room. The outer side of the door leaf does not play a special role in the perception of the interior interior of the apartment and may look, for example, like a simple painted metal leaf. The interior must undergo certain changes to the cladding, depending on changes in the interior of the room, unless wenge style with dark colors is used. In this case, the door leaf will suit any style of room and is unlikely to require any modification. If necessary, you can change the appearance of the door leaf with simple manipulations yourself by installing a new laminated skin that matches the color.
There are different opinions on the issue of color compatibility of door systems with flooring, often diametrically opposed. But practice shows that owners of house buildings and apartments select the color of interior elements based on personal preferences and sometimes their financial capabilities. But the main thing is that the result is desired, that it brings comfort and coziness for the people living in the room.

Laminate floor design examples
An impressive floor design in an apartment can be created using ordinary laminate. What could be interesting about it? Firstly, the texture. It can give a laminate that seems traditional at first glance a zest and a special flavor. And if you complement the coating with a stylish pattern, which, by the way, is also textured, then the interior will completely acquire an individual character.
Laminate can also be bright and memorable...
Secondly, an interesting combination of color and shape. It is not necessary to stick to the same shades - let each board have its own color nuance. And the chamfer will only add originality to such a floor.
An unusual combination of shape and color is the key to a stylish interior
Options for decorating floors with ceramic tiles
This flooring material is most often used in kitchens, hallways and bathrooms. However, it is also found in living rooms.
Tiles provide a huge scope for the designer’s imagination. It is convenient in terms of combination, easy to install and can diversify any interior. And if you choose an unusual installation method, the floor design will then turn into a real work of art.
Unusual tile laying
The shape of the tile also plays an important role. Traditional square or rectangular briquettes are already boring, so manufacturers began to produce ceramic floor tiles in a variety of sizes and shapes. A floor laid with such tiles looks interesting and unique.
Shape matters too
Gray floors in the kitchen
All shades of gray are ergonomic and easy to care for, so they are simply irreplaceable in rooms with an increased likelihood of surface contamination. For the kitchen, the best option for finishing the floor would be ash-colored tiles. Cleaning such a coating will not take much time. The ease of cleaning tiles in the kitchen plays a huge role both for bachelors’ apartments and for married couples with children.
As in the living room, a gray floor will serve as an excellent complement to bright sets. Kitchen furniture in yellow, light green, orange, turquoise and other rich shades against the background of an ashy floor covering will look less acidic and defiant.
Fans of natural materials do not have to give up their preferences. The variety of tiles that imitate parquet boards allows you to effectively decorate your kitchen in a classic style. Manufacturers offer tiles not only in the standard square shape: tiles in the form of a parquet board can be installed in a herringbone pattern, combining several shades of gray.
Self-leveling 3D floors
This technology appeared on the market relatively recently, but has already found a lot of fans. Still would! Having a floor in your apartment that recreates under your feet a sunny beach with white sand and shells, or a green meadow with daisies and cornflowers is a dream that has already become a reality for many.

Methods for decorating cork
Cork floors are in quite high demand. They are environmentally friendly, durable, reliable, and moderately soft. They can be used in almost any room, and caring for such a coating is easy. As for the aesthetic side of the issue, thanks to the latest technology using photo printing, cork floors can be turned into anything: a bed of carrots, a straw bed, or a flowering lawn.

There are a great many options for designing floors in an apartment, and every day there are more and more of them: new materials, new ideas and ideas appear, which means it is impossible to stop at just one thing. So that you can be convinced that floor design - a photo selection of original incarnations is below - is not such a simple task as it might seem at first glance, look at the complex design solutions that are already decorating someone’s home.

Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages of parquet flooring:
- Durability and ease of care (guaranteed to preserve its appearance for up to a hundred years with proper care without abrasives);
- The apartment takes on a new meaning (a house with parquet flooring is valued higher);
- Versatility (wooden flooring fits any interior, it can be easily repainted);
- Natural wood that does not accumulate static energy.
Disadvantages of wooden parquet:
- Cost of material and installation (this is one of the most expensive floor finishes; installation cannot be done independently, for example, like laminate);
- Periodic polishing (the harder the wood, the easier it is to scratch; sometimes you need to polish the floor to remove scuffs);
- When walking, it makes noise that may disturb the neighbors below;
- Not resistant to moisture, absorbs odor.
Kinds
Wooden planks with a length of 20-50 cm, a width of 4-7 cm and a thickness of 1-2 cm. There are grooves on the sides. The value depends on the thickness of the top layer. The slots in the bottom layer relieve stress from the entire board when stressed. There is difficulty in installation and you need to pay attention to the quality of the top coating.
The photo shows a combination of French herringbone (piece parquet was used) with a modern interior. Light wood types make the space wider, which is important for modern apartments.
Pronto-parquet is a type of piece parquet with precise grooves, with a thickness of the top layers of 0.5 cm and covered with layers of varnish. Withstands constant heavy loads (public places and stages) and is a universal durable coating.
Modular
Consists of different sized modules. The design on each module is made from individual parts of valuable wood and is fixed on a wooden base. Installs faster than a piece.
Art
The pattern differs in the method of installation (a geometric pattern is created by combining panels of different sizes and colors). The design can be in the form of a border, rosettes or an individual design.
The photo shows an example of how a covering with artistic masonry in the center makes a semantic accent on the dining table in the interior of the dining room.
It consists of three layers of wood, the front layer is made exclusively from noble wood (the selected type of wood affects the final cost of the product).
Color selection
To withstand heavy loads, it is better to choose hard wood, which also has a long service life and is more resistant to moisture and temperature changes. Based on the color of parquet in the interior there are:
Light (oak, bamboo, ash, maple) | Suitable for many style solutions, ethno-style, country, minimalism, makes the room brighter and visually wider. Combines with any color of furniture and walls. |
Dark (wenge and stained oak) | Massive furniture in a classic-style interior, white walls and furniture, red finishing tones and beige textiles go well with a dark floor. |
Red (kempast, paduk, doussia) | Rarely used due to the fact that such trees grow in Africa and Asia. |
- Pink is common and has low density (beech, pear, alder).
- Yellow is in great demand in different latitudes (teak, olive, iroko).
- Brown has a high density, wood is widely represented throughout the world (walnut, kumara, rosewood, merbau, scupira).

Laying methods
Herringbone
A type of laying block parquet that, due to the complexity of its structure, holds tightly. Here the load is distributed evenly and cracks do not form over time. As a variation of the well-known pattern, it can be varied with two types of colors or planks of different lengths.
Ladder (French herringbone)
It does not provide the same durable coating as the previous type, it is more difficult to install, but it looks unusual and original in the interior.
Deck
The dies are laid one after another with a certain shift (depending on the pattern):
- symmetrical deck,
- chaotic,
- half shift
- diagonal symmetrical deck,
- diagonal chaotic,
- diagonal with a shift of half or 1/3.
The photo shows the masonry with a symmetrical deck, which does not attract attention and looks discreet. Suitable for kitchen interiors in high-tech and minimalist styles.
A diagonal deck will visually enlarge a small room. The coating is reliable, but inferior to the herringbone because the parts do not intersect so closely with each other.
Vietnamese (squares)
Visually increases the size of the room; this method is resistant to mechanical stress and can withstand heavy loads. A square is laid out from three or more planks, which is placed next to the same square perpendicularly. The result is a neat and symmetrical pattern.
Basket (wicker)
Here, as in the herringbone, you can combine parquet of different colors and sizes to create a unique pattern that resembles wickerwork. Due to the arrangement of colors and patterns, it looks original and modern in the interior.
In addition, each masonry method can be combined or diversified with small square inserts from the same or a different type of wood.
Parquet on the wall
Design professionals are increasingly using floor coverings in wall designs in their projects. Decorating with parquet will require relatively less labor-intensive installation work, and the result will exceed all expectations.
The type of parquet in the apartment and the installation method must be chosen taking into account the size of the rooms, their functionality, as well as the style of the interior.
Parquet in the living room interior should be combined with a furniture set. Here, special attention is paid to color and texture, artistic parquet will emphasize the classic style, and for country, a deck in any order of installation is suitable. For the living room, it is recommended to use a 22 grade board to match the color of the interior. Natural material always decorates a room and makes it cozy.
The photo shows the interior of a bright living room in a classic style, with herringbone parquet flooring made of different colors of wood.
Popular color combinations
To successfully choose doors and floor coverings, you can study the catalogs of leading manufacturers: they always reflect global trends in interior fashion. Of the dark shades, the most popular are gray, brown, red-brown. Attractive light tones are considered milky, beige, pastel yellowish, grayish, light brown. It is unacceptable and too contrasting to combine a cold palette for the floor and a warm palette for the door panels: the range should be consistent.
Basic rules for combining floor and door tones
Experienced designers know that a combination of diverse textures in one room is unacceptable. The furnishings and decoration should be selected so that the materials are harmonized in texture and color. Thus, three basic rules are formed when creating an interior:
- no more than three primary colors in one room,
- all tones belong to either the warm or cool spectrum,
- successful combination of textures.
A parquet or wooden floor in combination with plastic door panels will look ugly. If it is decided to install the floor from wood, then the doors must match. When the doors are plastic, it is better to lay linoleum of a similar color on the floor. You also need to take into account the properties of light and dark tones: doorways that are too dark narrow the room, while light ones expand them. Dark and light floors work in a similar way. In small apartments with dark shades you need to be careful, you can achieve undesirable effects. On the contrary, in rooms with very high ceilings it is better to use rich, deep colors. This will not lead to loss of comfort.
By playing with contrasts of floors, doors, and walls, you can externally expand a narrow room, and use intense colors to “bring closer” the opposite wall. Large rooms are conducive to bold color experiments, but a pile-up of different tones is not allowed. If there are several doors in a room, they must all be the same.
Lighting plays a big role in choosing the colors of floors and doors. Artificial light helps change the appearance of the finish, and can either ruin it or highlight it. For example, cream and light yellow tones become inexpressive; the difference between all shades of beige and milky tones is practically lost. Black, dark brown, dark blue, cognac colors also merge when the light bulbs are turned on. Some tones are completely “recolored” when using artificial light:
- purple turns to purple,
- blue turns greenish,
- red takes on a tint of orange.
A popular combination is light doors and floors with dark wall coverings. Another common design solution is a single tone of walls and doors in combination with a contrasting shade of the floor. You can complement the interior with paintings, the frames of which are identical to the color of the floor covering. Slightly lighter doors from the same range will go well with the floor in dark colors, while the walls will be even lighter.
Choosing colors for doors and floors
The selection of specific colors for interior decoration depends not only on the size and type of room, but also on the intended style and installed furniture. Here are recommendations to help you choose a range of tones for the main components of the room:
- light, creamy gray tones, any light wood species are suitable for country, baroque, Scandinavian style, classics,
- cold light and dark tones are used in high-tech, loft, minimalism styles,
- dark shades of wood (wenge, teak, walnut, merbau) are usually used in classic interiors,
- bright colors are suitable for modern, boho,
- delicate shades (mint, purple, pink) are ideal for romantic and Provence styles.
If the rooms in the house are decorated in different styles, and all the doors open onto the corridor, select canvases based on the style decision in the hallway. It is also permissible to install white doors, since they, like white windows, can be used in any interior.
As for the texture of the door panels, the classic options require the presence of patterns, carvings, doors in the minimalist and modern styles are made smooth, and panels in the Provence style have an aged effect.
Photo in the bedroom
Parquet in the bedroom interior will set the mood for relaxation, making the morning good from the warm touch of your feet to the floor. It is recommended to choose class 21, 22 parquet. Perfectly emphasizes country, Provence, eco-style and classic style. Depending on the laying pattern and color of the boards, you can make the room wider.
The photo shows an example of the interior of a royal-sized bedroom, where artistic parquet sets the mood.
Parquet in the interior of a children's room must be laid taking into account the increased load on the floor, the possibility of getting wet, mechanical aggression and marker patterns (protective varnish will make the coating durable, periodic sanding will remove scratches). This coating is not slippery, not cold, and environmentally friendly.
Floor in the interior of the rooms
In any room, dark flooring will look appropriate with the right combination of colors of the carpet, furniture, walls and doors.
Living room
For the hall it is better to use parquet boards, laminate, carpet. Warm material, a fireplace, and soft, steamy furniture will set you up for a pleasant conversation. In a small living room, it is better not to use black flooring.
Bedroom
All shades that will be combined with a light bed and wardrobe, as well as colored or dark furniture are suitable here.
The photo shows a bedroom interior with dark laminate flooring and brick-like stone walls, which are painted in different colors.
Kitchen
Gray or brown linoleum, wood-effect tiles or square tiles with alternating colors are suitable. Black tiles go well with a white set; glossy tiles go well with a matte set.
Children's
This is a comfort zone for a child; the floor in the nursery should be relatively soft, non-slip and resistant to moisture. Lacquered parquet, moisture-resistant laminate, carpet or carpet on a wooden floor are suitable. It is better to choose a colored or brown shade for the flooring.
Hallway
As a room that is often exposed to pollution and poorly lit by daylight, it should combine light walls and ceilings with dark moisture-resistant laminate or porcelain tiles. A plain glossy tile with a decorative frieze carpet in the middle of the hallway is suitable.
In the photo, the interior of the hallway with graphite parquet, blue walls and white interior doors, additional lighting and white surfaces add a sense of space.
Bathroom
For the bathroom you need to select non-slip tiles of any dark color; brown and gray can be called universal. If the floor is black, then the wallpaper or painting should be light, stripes are allowed. If the bathroom is large, it can be zoned using different floor finishes, for example, tiles in the bathroom area, and moisture-resistant laminate in the cabinet area.
Photos in the interior
The photographs below show options for using parquet boards in the interior of rooms for various functional purposes.
Reading time ≈ 3 minutes
Despite the fact that the floor is under your feet, it can often be considered the face of the house.
The interior uses a large number of materials for walls, ceilings and furniture. But when it comes to flooring, most people choose wood. This is not surprising: the material is beautiful and noble, floors made from it are warm and environmentally friendly.
The flooring market offers four “wooden” products: parquet boards and parquet, floorboards, and laminate. Each option has many varieties to suit every taste. Designers suggest thinking about your choice when it comes to improving or renovating your living room, bedroom or kitchen. Children's rooms, as a rule, require a soft fleecy covering.
Gray floor in the living room
Ashy shades help make the room restrained and solemn at the same time. A gray floor serves as an excellent backdrop for light or bright furniture: in the first case, it emphasizes the purity and sophistication of the set, in the second, it adds depth to the rich shade, but neutralizes its dominance in the interior of the room.
Carpets on gray floors look especially harmonious. Both long-pile products made in rich, rich colors and neutral brown or beige carpets combine perfectly with a neutral gray tone, giving the room a special coziness.
The living room should not be gray and dull, so aggressive shades can be used to create a non-trivial atmosphere in this room. A gray floor helps reduce their impact, making the design more balanced, restrained and calm.
Good parquet
The parquet flooring is based on a solid mass. For parquet floors, hardwood is most often used. The materials for the boards are traditional maple, oak, cherry, ash, as well as “guests” from Africa, Asia and America: mahogany, teak, merbau, sucupira.
Another grade - natural - represents parquet of the highest class. No matter what flooring design you choose, it will give you the best results. Lower grades are characterized by color variations and small knots, while natural grades are not.
The presence of knots is a separate matter. There should be no shortcomings in parquet that claims to be a top-class product. No more than 3 knots are allowed on the plank, minimum sapwood and no mechanical damage. In addition, the evenness of the wood structure is important. Look at the photos of the floor design that are posted in our article, this is what an ideal parquet floor should look like.
Democratic laminate
Experts consider the terms “laminated parquet” and “laminate” to be inaccurate. This product is not parquet. Laminate flooring differs from it in almost every way. This material is artificial. Its thickness is two times less than that of parquet. Despite its practicality, the service life of laminate flooring is 20 years. This product is suitable for those who like to make changes to the interior of the apartment. Typically, laminate flooring designs are more varied than parquet flooring.
Laminate flooring is the most modern in its class; it appeared 20 years ago as an alternative to parquet. Mostly in Russia, laminate from Germany is presented, imitating wood or stone. Decorative possibilities, however, are not limited to this. The coating can imitate a metal surface or fashionable ornaments depicting abstract images and compositions.
Golden mean?
Parquet boards are a reasonable compromise between laminate and parquet flooring. It appeared in Sweden 60 years ago. What is the difference between the material and its analogues? Parquet board is a natural covering of wood, it is produced, however, according to the principles of pie, however, unlike laminate, it uses 100% natural ingredients. The stabilizing layer consists of pine and spruce plywood, and the middle layer consists of wood strips of common species. The top layer is the most valuable; it represents a cut of oak or walnut wood. The fibers of the layers overlap.
How the parquet board will look on the floor depends on the owner and designer. Choose the classics: herringbone, deck laying, wicker. Combine material with insert. It is fashionable to cover the floor with artificially aged parquet boards.
When designing, floor design is very important. It can only be a background, or it can attract attention. It all depends on how you see your home. In connection with the vision, the floor design is developed. First, the tone is chosen - dark or light, then the materials are selected and only then the technical aspects are decided.
Floor color and interior
Floor design begins with color selection. To begin with, not so much color as tone: whether the floor will be light or dark in the room. There are many selection criteria. This is the style of the room, its dimensions, your desires.
In recent decades, light-colored floors have become a clear favorite. It is typical for most fashionable styles of decorating apartments and houses. Light flooring should be of Scandinavian design, minimalism, modern style, pop art, and even popular Provence and loft. They make light, and sometimes even shiny, floors in exotic high-tech and in some no less exotic directions.
Light floor in loft style - carefully aged wood
Dark floors are appropriate in a classic interior and other “historical” trends - baroque, gothic, rococo, etc., they are also characteristic of oriental ethnic trends - rooms decorated in Japanese and Chinese styles. If you know exactly what kind of setting you want, it's easier for you. If you haven’t fully decided yet, you’ll have to figure it out further.
Style isn't all there is to it. Different floor colors create different sensations. A light floor covering makes the interior light and airy and optically expands the boundaries of the room. That is, this is an option for small rooms.
But at the same time, the atmosphere is “cold”. The room is light and light, but “comfort” in the classical sense will not work. But you can place dark or bright furniture, some outlandish accessories. Against a light background, all this does not hurt the eyes and brings a touch of coziness. After a busy day, this environment might be better.
The dark floor, on the contrary, is heavier and more down-to-earth. It gives a feeling of comfort and stability, but in a small room, and even with low ceilings, a “box” effect appears. Comfort becomes oppressive and heavy. You can compensate for this effect with very light walls and ceilings and an abundance of light. If you want a dark floor in a small room, the furniture and doors should be light.
Gloomy...
Large areas with high ceilings and dark floors may look good with dark furniture and doors, but with bright multi-zone lighting and very light floors and ceilings. For standard apartments this is not an option.
And finally, let's move on to the practical component. Everyone has long known that dirt is more visible on a light surface. This is also true for the floor and you will have to clean it more often. But you will be able to save on electricity and lighting: with the same amount of light, the illumination in a room with a light floor is better. And this, by the way, is also one of the selection criteria. If the room is directed to the south, you can “shade” it with a dark floor, and vice versa - in the north, lighten it with a white or light gray floor.
One of the intermediate options - neither dark nor light
Combinations of floor color and existing furniture
The main rule for these elements is that a significant difference in tones and shades, but not colors, is required. In the first case, the furniture becomes invisible against the same background of the floor, in the second, on the contrary, it looks like unnatural, sharp inclusions in the style. If such a mistake has already been made, then it can be partially corrected by using a contrasting carpet for the floor - place it under the furniture, and it will look more organic against the background of the floor. Professionals recommend the following combinations of floor and furniture colors:
There are options for dark furniture and dark floors, they have the right to life, but they look very unusual.
And one last thing. In any combination, furniture cannot have more than three colors, otherwise any room turns into a playroom for preschool institutions.
Organically designed children's room. The color of the floor is in harmony with the wallpaper, curtains, furniture, bedspread
Only two options for combining shades and colors are used: a contrasting option and in one color. If the floor and doors are the same color, then choose the second one several tones lighter. Due to this, the space is logically perceived in the direction from above, from the light ceiling to the dark floor. If white doors are installed in the room, then transitions should be made through the use of structural accessories on the walls and furniture. Doors in dark colors are recommended for use in cases where the floor is pastel in color.
There are two universal rules when selecting colors for floors, walls and ceilings, which can be used in 90% of cases.
There is no need to read articles about what color and how to choose a floor, what goes together and what is not recommended for use. Remember that not a single advisor will live in your apartment, and accordingly, he will not “enjoy” the results of his recommendations. And since you live in it, then the decisive and final word is yours. All clever words about which color is friendly with which and which is not should be taken only as recommendations, and not a prerequisite.
The main rule is that the colors should be friendly to you and please you personally. If your tastes coincide with the opinions of the designers, great; if not, don’t pay attention to them, do what pleases you.
The color of the floor should match your favorite shades and match your psychological profile. These are two factors that have the maximum impact on the comfort of living in an apartment.
Conclusion - you can combine any floor colors with any walls and ceilings. But you can do this not only with pleasure, but also according to the rules.
First you need to familiarize yourself with two characteristics of color.
- Lightness.
The hue gradually changes from standard to lighter or darker - the process of a smooth transition of color to white or black is called lightness change. - Saturation.
Changes when gray is added to the base color. As the concentration of gray increases, the saturation changes and eventually the color becomes gray.
Colors combine well if they have the same lightness, saturation, or both lightness and saturation.
To simplify the choice of floor color, you can use special color fans; they are sold in specialized stores. Each fan tab has a separate color with different saturation options. For ease of use, all shades have an international classification.

How to use color fans?
Step 1.
Choose a wall shade that already exists in the room. Determine its location on the fan tab.
Step 2.
Unfold the fan and notice what colors the chosen shade goes with. All options are located at the same fan height.
Step 3.
Choose a suitable floor color option.
This is a theory, but in practice it is necessary to take into account the finishing floor covering materials currently in use. You should know their shades and focus on real options.
Video - Options for color combinations in the interior of premises
Imagine that you entered a room where the walls, floor, ceiling and all the furniture are gray in the same shade. And even the vase that stands on the table is also gray. Boring. There is nothing for the eye to “catch onto” and therefore discomfort begins to be felt. I want to leave quickly or fall asleep, the main thing is not to see this dull interior.
Of course, this is a critical case, but it is always worth remembering if you are developing an interior design yourself and want to use gray and its shades as the main color.
Gray is a very interesting color. On the one hand, it is neutral, especially its light undertones and shades, but on the other hand, it can become overwhelming and irritating if only dark shades of gray are used in the interior or there is too much of it, as in the case described above.
Proper use of gray and its shades in the interior allows you to create a cozy and comfortable design for any room, from the living room and bedroom to the kitchen and hallway.
- Background color
- Only pieces of furniture or decorative details will be gray
- A mixed option, when the walls and sofa are gray as the central object of the interior.
Floor materials and design
Undoubtedly, the two most popular types of flooring are laminate and ceramic tiles. Laminate is used most often in residential premises; some of its types are suitable for technical purposes according to their technical characteristics. Ceramic tiles, on the contrary, are present in technical rooms - bathroom, kitchen, hallway, corridor, and are almost never used in residential ones. These two floor coverings are used in almost every renovation and the design is developed mainly based on these materials.
Laminate in the interior and its types
This flooring is just an imitation of wood, tiles, parquet. But current technologies make it possible to repeat the texture with high accuracy. If you consider that the coating is relatively inexpensive, and there are a lot of options, the service life is about 5-8 years, its popularity becomes clear.
It is impossible to count how many wood-look laminate colors there are. There is an imitation of any breed in any color, with different board widths. So you can find the required color for any request. But there are also non-standard colors. For example, laminate imitating tiles or parquet. It is not found very often and is not available from all manufacturers, which is why many people do not know about such colors. It is produced not in the form of rectangles, but in the form of squares. Below are some examples of such unusual colors.
Imitation of floor tiles of any color and format is also laminate Imitation of parquet is also laminate
But wood laminate looks no less advantageous in most interiors. It is available in both light and dark colors. So it won’t be too difficult to find the option you need.
There is laminate in traditional beige and brown tones, and there are ultra-fashionable bleached colors - bleached oak, ash, pine and others. They are used to create those very light and unobtrusive interiors in modern style, minimalism and others.
This is bleached ash. Warm, slightly beige shade
Dark types of laminate look just as good. They completely recreate a wooden surface.
Suitable for some modern interiors
Tile
We can talk about design options for ceramic tile floors for a long time. The number of collections tends to infinity, different sizes, shapes, colors, shades, plain-colored, with ornaments, designs, etc... as well as all sorts of combinations of them. In addition, there are unusual options that have become popular over the past few years.
The trend of the last year is the use of tiles that imitate wood on the floor. Such oddities - in laminate they imitate tiles, in ceramics they imitate wood. However, wood-look tiles are used by fashionable designers in the kitchen or hallway.

This solves the question: lay tiles or laminate on the floor in the kitchen or hallway. The tiles are more convenient to use, because even the best laminate does not like water, it swells and swells. If its quality is normal, after some time the coating returns to normal. But water or other liquid can be spilled again... So they laid the tiles on the floor, fortunately there was a heated floor and in this version it was comfortable in the kitchen (and in the bathroom). It was difficult to coordinate the “wooden” pattern of the laminate and the smooth, shiny tiles. But now with wood-look ceramic tiles, this problem is solved. The joint is made much easier.
Another option for the kitchen
Tiles with uneven edges look interesting on the floor. If you rub the seams with a contrasting color composition, it turns out very expressive.
Honeycomb-shaped tiles are rare. Hexagons are difficult to arrange, but the effect is unexpected.
Hexagonal shape
If we talk about more traditional shapes - squares and rectangles, then using them you get very interesting floor decor. The technique with large and small tiles has long been known, however, with new collections a different look is obtained.
For some country styles, tiles with patterns are suitable. Recently, the combination of brown and white has become more popular.
In this interior, floor design is a key point.
Laying such tiles is also not easy: the match must be down to a millimeter. All deviations are noticeable and disrupt harmony. So the master must be highly qualified.
When planning the design of a tile floor, remember that the following rule also applies in this case: either the floor will be bright and the rest of the interior will be calm, or vice versa. You can make the floor and furniture the same color or match the doors tone-on-tone (or a very close shade). You shouldn’t choose a color regardless of the other situation, or you’ll end up with something indigestible.
The junction of laminate and tiles
The most problematic areas when independently developing a floor design are the combination of two different coatings. Let me give you one piece of advice. If you do not have artistic inclinations, make the joint smooth. It looks much better than the vague, crooked lines that you can sometimes see.
The practical purpose of tiles near the front door is clear: they are easier to clean. But the form was chosen completely poorly. In this case, the section could have been extended even to the second door and the joint could have been made, perhaps slightly curved, if you absolutely didn’t like straight lines.
The same problem - tiles near the front door - was solved more successfully
They try not to use thresholds, as in the photo. But if the thickness of the coatings differs, this cannot be avoided. However, shiny stripes are not used in modern design. Choose a color as close as possible to either the tile or the laminate. Ideally it should match. Then the rounded lines do not “hurt” the eyes.
If you are joining different floor coverings from two rooms, connect them under the door. To match, use a cork backing that is painted to match the color of the laminate or tile. This results in a neat seam. In this case, it is important to trim the edges evenly. They can be sharpened until they match completely.
If you still want uneven lines, then they are drawn for a reason. They can repeat a line on the ceiling, outline the outline of furniture, or connect two specific points. In any case, the connection must be logical. In the photo below you can see a successful example. Although the color and character of the surface are very different, the repetition of color in the furniture harmonizes this. The alignment line, if you look closely, goes around the furniture. Everything is natural, and therefore “it doesn’t hurt the eyes.”
This is the basic rule: when choosing floor coverings, pay attention to the fact that the colors fall into the same group and are compatible, and that they are repeated in the decorative elements of the premises.
Flooring color - how to choose the right one?
Flooring color - how to choose the right one?
Where should you start when choosing a flooring color? There are two ways: choose the floor design you like and match the wallpaper, doors and furniture to it - there will always be something suitable, or match the floor to the wallpaper, doors and furniture. Considering that the floor is laid before the wallpaper is glued, ideally, even at the initial stage of renovation, you should have a ready-made project of the final interior, or at least have an idea of what the room should look like - this greatly simplifies the process of selecting all the necessary components. Let's look at the main points to consider when purchasing a floor.
Room and floor color
Each component of the room plays a role in the overall impression of the interior. It is worth remembering that the color of the floor can create different effects - making a room larger or smaller, changing its color temperature, creating a mood and emphasizing or weakening the color scheme. A small detail to consider when choosing flooring color is the natural light in the room. If the room is on the sunny side and is illuminated by sunlight most of the time, then dark wallpaper and flooring will not look gloomy and cold, and light colors will sparkle in a new way and look especially cozy.
By the way, vinyl floors do not fade from sunlight, so you can safely install them in rooms facing the “sunny side.” As for the area of the room, it is worth remembering one of the most common design rules - light shades make the room larger. In a small room, especially with low ceilings, it is better to choose flooring in light colors - dark ones will only emphasize the small size of the room.
However, it should be remembered that a large amount of cold light colors lowers the color temperature in the room.
Which floor to choose for this or that room?
Light shades are better suited for a nursery and a bathroom - in the first case, the floor will create lightness, in the second, it will enlarge a small room. There is no need to be intimidated by this color as impractical - rather, you need to choose floor coverings based on their surface. On a light-colored floor, stains and scratches are less visible. A very practical option would be quartz-vinyl in light shades - for example, the Bezier Oak design will delight you with its beautiful light color, ease of cleaning, and also durability - it is very difficult to scratch, and it is not afraid of office chair wheels, heels or animal claws. In the corridor, especially in the hallway, a great solution would be to lay a dark floor so that dust and dirt are not so noticeable. A good option is PVC tiles, for example, Detroit design - this wear-resistant floor looks very stylish and is also easy to clean.
Whatever floor you choose, it is worth considering the combination of the floor covering with other interior elements (read about them below). For example, a bright, eye-catching interior should be balanced with a calm floor shade. Otherwise, there is a risk of getting a tacky room design, which can tire over time, or shifting the emphasis from a carefully planned interior with a bright floor.
An unevenly colored floor has its advantages - it combines with several colors at the same time and better masks minor stains. However, it has a small drawback - it can be difficult to see something accidentally dropped on it.
Wallpaper and flooring
When choosing wallpaper and flooring, you need to determine in advance what mood the interior should convey. It is worth remembering that light floors and walls enlarge the room and give it airiness. Dark walls and a dark floor make the room smaller, making it gloomier, and in combination with a light ceiling they create a pit effect when the light is only above you.
A dark floor looks interesting with light walls, however, it is worth balancing this combination with interior items and furniture. So, a dark floor, light walls and furniture look ridiculous, but it’s worth adding a few dark accents, and the interior takes on style.
Doors and floors
Previously, the laws of interior fashion stated that the floor and doors should be in the same color. Modern interior design removes these strict rules, leaving only the law of temperature combination of shades unchanged - a cold floor with cold doors, a warm floor with warm ones, albeit of a different tone. In addition, it is worth considering the geometry and area of the room. Doors that contrast with the floor in a small room will look massive and take away part of the space, so in order to increase and/or maintain its area, you should give preference to doors of the same shade as the floor.
Are you renovating a narrow and long room? If the doorway is on a narrow wall, you should choose bright doors that will bring the wall closer and make the room more harmonious. To create a unified space, you can choose a floor in the same color scheme as the doors.
Floors and baseboards
Such a seemingly insignificant element as a plinth can change and emphasize the design of a room. When choosing this finishing detail, it is worth considering the color of the doors.
If you plan to lay a dark floor, and the doors are light, then the baseboards should also be light. If, on the contrary, the floor is light and the doors are dark, then both light and dark baseboards will look great. Another option is to complement the dark floor and doors with a light baseboard - white baseboards look interesting in combination with a light or gray floor - it gives airiness, lightness, and emphasizes the geometry of the room.
Furniture and flooring
If the interior involves wooden furniture, then it is best to match it to the doors and trim - this way it will look the most organic. Light furniture is best suited to light floors, dark furniture is best suited to dark floors, and bright furniture goes well with both types of floor coverings. Perhaps the main thing here is to take into account the general style of the room and the color temperature of each component of the interior.
